DMV driver responsibility fee
Holy crap! Ever had to pay one of these?!!! I think it is like $300 over 3 years....I got a speeding ticket like 1 1/2 years ago.....I already paid that fee...now this!
And to make things better, DMV website is agonizingly slow right now
I just want to pay this & be done

Re: DMV driver responsibility fee
I think it's crap...
Here's a link to info at the NYS DMV
What is a driver responsibility assessment? In addition to any fines, fees, penalties, or surcharges that you pay for a traffic conviction, you must pay the driver responsibility assessment. The assessment is an amount that you must pay each year for three years. You pay the assessment to the DMV.
Who must pay a driver responsibility assessment?
You can have NYS driver responsibility assessments to pay if you have a driver license in NYS or a driver license from another state and you have driver incidents in NYS.
You must pay the driver responsibility assessment if any of the following incidents occur in NYS:
you are convicted of an alcohol-related traffic violation and the violation occurred on or after November 18, 2004 (includes boats and snowmobiles); or
you are convicted of a drug-related traffic violation and the violation occurred on or after November 18, 2004 (includes boats and snowmobiles); or
a DMV hearing determines that you refused a chemical test and the refusal occurred on or after November 18, 2004 (includes boats and snowmobiles); or
you receive six or more points on your NYS driver record during a period of 18 months and the violations occurred on or after November 18, 2004.
~~~~~~~~~~ So in addition to the tickets, processing charges, increased insurance rates, the DMV "punishes" you for three years.
I had to pay this. I got a speeding ticket on the service road of the LIE. If I knew about this I would have protested and bargained down the points, so I didn't hit the limit.
It got voted into law quietly with other bills. IMO, It's just another way for the lawmakers to pay for their extravagent parties, benefits, bonuses, etc...
I think she means above the "ticket"
Some of those are very serious crimes...
And a 6 point speeding ticket is pretty severe ..
Agreed. I'm still confused - she had to pay the speeding ticket and then $300 on top of that. It is a little much if you ask me.
ETA: I think the 6 points is for Speeding 21-30 MPH over posted limit. I'm not condoning it, but on a LIE service road, I don't think this is uncommon.
I agree , its a LOT of money and I'd be pissedd off too.
I think for a speeding ticket its a lot...the other tickets I think well, its a good deterent.
in this situation, a 6 point speeding ticket does mean you were WAY above the speed limit and that is why this is being inforced, But Im not judging, I would be mad as hell. Why not just charge more of a fine then ?
I agree that some of them are severe, the alcohol/drug ones of course.
A 6 point speeding ticket is NOT that severe, in my opinion. It's 20 MPH over the speed limit. Most of the time when driving on Long Island expressway/parkways, you're doing 20MPH over the speed limit. Or, since fines are doubled in work zones, that means if you are doing 10MPH over in the lower speed limit work zone, even when they're not working - you get a 6 point speeding ticket and are assessed the extra fee.
It says if you receive 6 points over 18 months for speeding, not necessarily at one time. You get 3 points for getting ticket if you are going ONE mile over the speed limit.
ETA: If you are convicted of DUI of alcohol or drugs, I would hope they are arrested and lose their license.
Yes - it is not just for speeding, either. It's any infraction where you would get points on your license.
Yes, you're right. I was taking the example given. You get points for blocking the box, cell phone use, seat belt violations, etc.
Re: DMV driver responsibility fee
The other 'fun to know about this' is that a defensive driving course will NOT remove the points so you don't need to pay this fee. All your points will still count towards your fee. The defensive driving class will 'remove' the points from the license suspension list ONLY.
Re: DMV driver responsibility fee
I agree , the 6 point part of the fee is frivalous.
But the drug and alcohol charges.... I could care less if they charged $300 a month.
I dont think they should be lumped together. Sorry if you are paying this "fee" because of that.
