Do 20 month olds interact/play with other kids?

Athan has no problem being around other kids but he usually goes off on his own playing with toys and stuff - not much interaction. For example last weekend he was with a little girl his age and he basically ignored her and was fixated with playing with her Laugh and Learn Home. Is this normal for this age to still kind of play on their own?

Yup, that's how DD was around that age too. If the other kid/s were her age or younger, she didn't want to interact with them much. But if they were older, she'd stare and them and try to play with them.

I think it's very normal! Chat Icon

THANK YOU!!!!! Chat Icon Chat Icon He is very fascinated with older kids, but kids his age or younger he just doesn't pay any mind too. I was concerned because he stays home with my mom during the day and the only interaction he gets with other children his age is once a week when we take him to My Gym and even there, he just runs around and does his own thing.

No problem. That's DD to a T also...she's with my MIL 3x/week and with my friend (and her two kids) one day a week; until we started gymnastics in June, she barely had any social interaction besides some playdates.

I definitely think it's perfectly normal, esp. at that age...if anything, it's GOOD that he can entertain himself and doesn't need constant interaction with others, IMO!

DD has a cousin a year younger than her...she literally wanted NOTHING to do with him until he started walking (and she turned 2 right around the same time), so between those 2 events, they interact a TON now (again, he likes interacting w/her b/c she's older than him).

yup...my DD and her cousin 3 mo apart (she is 27 mo and he is 30 mo) JUST started really playing with each other. They would always play in the same room but mostly keep to themselves!

Totally normal, maria!!

Most toddlers until they get to preschool age engage in "parallel play" where they may play side by side with another child but the children do not interact or actually play with each other.

It's a completely normal stage of social development!!Chat Icon Chat Icon

I'm hoping Frankie and Athan will get to play next to each other soon!!Chat Icon

DS is 25 months and he is just beginning to show interest in playing with other kids. At that age, he enjoyed having kids around him but did not actually play with them.

At that age, parallel play is very normal-kids playing along side each other but not really together.

DD is 26 months and has just started to really play with other kids.

She's in a day care center and has tons of social interaction with other kids but the playing together just started.

Re: Do 20 month olds interact/play with other kids?

At this age they engage is what is called parallel play. They will involve themselves in a play activity that may be solitary (blocks, cars etc) but have no problem doing it next to another child or in a group. If its run and chase, they will run and interact to a point, but they may not really get the rules of the game, so they will do their own thing along with the group... HTH Chat Icon
