Do any animal shelters on LI take donations?
I run a community service club at the school I teach at and the kids want to do an activity to help animals. Since the kids are very young I was thinking of having them collect new bags of food, new toys, leashes, etc.
Is there a shelter that is open to taking these types of supplies? We would also be able to collect money but with the age group that I'm working with they like to bring in actual things.
Any thoughts?

How about Angel's Gate in Smithtown?
I bet they would take anything you could give.

or of course I would suggest Little Shelter in Huntington. But I would bet a lot of places don't take physical supplies....

I'm pretty sure if you go to Little Shelters website they have a list of items they need...Blankets, towels, dry food, etc.
That is a wonderful idea - BTW!!!

I had a Scrapbooking fund raiser for Little Shelter and we collected food, blankets, dog bed and other pet stuff and they took it all.
Its a great place!!

North shore animal league, Animal humane society. I give those, but beware of the mail you will get.. they send me envelopes 2 times a week looking for donations.

I've donated blankets, collars, food, litter and leashes The Town of Smithtown animal shelter. They took it all!

That is why I believe it or not I send anon donations. I literally will send a check or something without a return address, no address on it b/c I don't want to get all that solicitation. I am with you on this.

To make sure the shelter you choose is getting what IT really needs, be sure to contact it ahead of time. The people that run it should be happy to provide you with a specific list of items they can really use.

Does it have to be LI? Also, you should find a small group that does not have money etc. Little Shelter - go to guidestar.com...took in $1 million or more last year...NSALA about $25 million.
Give to the struggling groups or individuals that pay out of their own pockets to save animals.
