Do cats need air conditioning?
DH and I weren't sure if the cats really needed it or not. I mean if its over 100 I certainly would put them in the room with some air but like anything below that do they need it?
Stubby is 2 and Haley is 3 Months.
Oh and currently both are being treated for a upper resp infection (nothing bad) that Haley introduced to Stubby.

Re: Do cats need air conditioning?
My co-op gets hot because I get a lot of sun and I have a lot of large windows. I'd put the AC on for my cat when the outside temps were going to be over 90. Other days I would have my windows open (i'm on the second floor), and leave the ceiling fan running on low in the bedroom. Mine was an older cat and I didn't want to stress him.
Just keep an eye on them to see how they handle the heat and make sure you leave out plenty of water for them to drink. Mine liked a bowl of ice cubes - more to play with than to drink.

Re: Do cats need air conditioning?
put the air conditioning in the house (three units to start to get it cooled then working down to two) the house was 94 when i got home and both were breathing a bit heavier and very nasty.
One water bowl was empty and the water fountain was half empty so I am thinking they needed it.

We put the central AC on 75 for her.
Once she got dehyrdrated and it was really bad - now it's my fear that it will happen again so I put out multiple sources of water and keep the temp lower.

Re: Do cats need air conditioning?
I've never put the AC on for the cats. They find the cool places in the house and are always fine. Actually, the days when it is really hot and I put the AC on for us, the cats don't even come into the room that is cool, they hang out upstairs where it's hotter.

Need?... A/C has only been in houses since the 1950's, so they don't *need* it... Want? I've seen several happy cats sitting by the A/C vents, so I definitely think they *want* it...

Re: Do cats need air conditioning?
We live on the top floor of a 4th floor building. It is torture in there in the summer months. It just does not cool down fast enough if we were to turn it on when we get home at 5 pm.
One day we turned the ac off. We came home one day when it was about 90 something outside & found him hiding under a chair panting from the heat in the apartment.
NEVER again was it shut off. I would never forgive myself if something happened to him because of the heat.

Re: Do cats need air conditioning?
we have two window units in our apt so we usually leave the living room one on for them during the summer months unless its extremely cool. If it gets too hot (85 or higher) then we leave the one in the bedroom. We also leave out multiple water bowls and leave the tub dripping w/ cold water

How many poor kitties died of dehydration? I put it on when the outside temp is 85.

Why would they die of dehydration if plenty of water was left out for them? Cats do not need air conditioning. Even if it was 95 degrees in the house, they would find the coolest place, drink water and would be perfectly fine. If it is something YOU would like to do to make your cat more comfortable, then that is fine, but a cat will not die if it is not in an air-conditioned house in the summer. I grew up in Farmingdale in a house with no a/c. We had 3 cats. They were always fine.
As the OP said, as long as they have plenty of water, they will find the most comfortable spot in the house. For our cats, the basement was always about 20 degrees cooler, but we always found them upstairs when we got home

Agreed. I have never heard of a house cat dying of dehydration because of no A/C. What did people with pets do before A/C was invented? Outdoor cats and strays etc seem to survive the 90 and 100 degree days just fine. My cats are a little lethargic when I get home and the house is hot- they perk up when I turn the AC on. But they have plenty of water at all times and they adapt- by slowing down and not running like crazy and finding cool places in the house (under the couch etc) Animals are survivalists by nature. Not like us spoiled humans!

Domestic animals that are living in our homes that are temperature controlled are not strays and living in the wild. They are not accustomed to harsh conditions. I am concerned that my cats will not tolerate the heat. When I come home their bodies are hot and they are lethargic. Why shouldn't I keep them more comfortable? I don't want to worry that I will come home and find a dead cat. They may not die of the heat, but any other underlying condition could be exacerbated by the heat including ones we are not aware of.
