Re: Do dogd NEED to have their anal glands expressed?
Only if there is a problem. Most dogs "express" their anal glands on their own when they poop.
If they can't or don't, then they can get blocked up and will need to be expressed. It's different for every dog. If they need to be done, it's usually every few months. You can tell when they start to scoot on their butt.
I had a Dobie whose glands needed to be done about once a month...I had the vet show me how to do it and started doing it myself.

okay, thank you. Kanga was scooting her butt on the rug as if it itched and I did notice her poop was strange consistency. It's back to normal and she isn't scooting anymore but I think I'll take her anyway.

Our pug couldn't do it herself and it really bothered her. We used to have to take her to the vet to get it done but then she figured out how to do it on her own.

WOW, I knew that it could happen to any dog but I thought it was not common in large breeds!
My dachshund needs it done every few weeks. Adding fiber to his diet helped but it took time to some figure out how much fiber. Start slow if you do add fiber.
