Re: Do Dr.'s get paid more for performing C-sections?
I know when I got my EOB (explanation of benefits) after my two kids, the c/s cost were much more than when I had my VBAC. That's really all I can go by. What was billed to my insurance.

Re: Do Dr.'s get paid more for performing C-sections?
I googled it, and according to this article, there is really not much of a difference in what doctors get paid for a vaginal birth vs a c-section.
However, according to this article (a Canadian website so not sure if it exactly applies to the US), there is still a financial gain for a C-section vs vaginal birth because of the time spent for each one.
A vaginal delivery can take 24 hours or more, whereas a C-section normally takes about 20 to 30 minutes. Less time means more procedures can be done within a shift, which means more money for doctors. "You can hang around helping a woman for 24, 36 hours to avoid a caesarean section. You can stay up all night long, completely exhaust yourself and get the same thing as you would if you did . . . three or four caesarean sections in the same time period," Klein said.
however, the article is quick to add that doctors are trained to decrease risk, and since C-sections are slightly riskier it's unlikely they'll just choose C-sections because of money alone.
ETA: The hospitals definitely get more money from the insurance companies for C-sections, but the doctors don't see much of a difference.

Re: Do Dr.'s get paid more for performing C-sections?
my doc's rate are around 7000 for vaginal and 9000 for csec..i found this out when his office made me call my ins and tell them those are his rate and if they will cover all, since he is out of network..c-sec is major surgery, so i can see the higher cost

It used to be. I am not sure anymore.
I think a lot of Drs prefer c-section for liability issues.

Re: Do Dr.'s get paid more for performing C-sections?
its not much more, maybe $2k
They do not get paid what is billed to insurance. I think Ins was billed something like close to $30k for everything (hospital, anesthesiologist, pediatrician, nursery, etc...) but the OB only got $3,140
ok I just looked it up, my OB's delivery fees in 2001:
Vaginal $4,500 C-Section $5,500 (they rec'd and accepted, $3,140)

Re: Do Dr.'s get paid more for performing C-sections?
I would think it would be more because there's more involved in doing a c-secion. I know that my Midwife submitted a bill for around $4500 and got paid $1600 from the insurance company. The hopsital billed by insurance for $12k for my stay and they were paid something like 6k.
