Do high schools have Business Teachers

A friend of mine who majored in business is very unhappy in the corporate world and would very much like to go into teaching and I was thinking to myself that there was an accounting class when i was in high school - what kind of background do you need to teach those sorts of classes?

Re: Do high schools have Business Teachers

My high school had a business department. They offered b-law, accounting, and keyboarding classes. I think there were more but it's been a while.

I was thinking about doing this, my MIL was the director of curiculum in one of the NYC school districts and told me that since I already had my masters in business, I could get a certificate in education. I never pursued it, but have been thinking I may look into it when Sarah gets a little older.

My high school did - I would guess the business department was 6-8 teachers maybe?

This is a very competitve area because depending on the school and the programs, there may not be many business teachers. Also, since NY State Ed Dept got rid of Regents sequences - you don't have students going for sequences in business anymore. My school has ONE business teacher!!

That's funny - I'm at a diff HS in the district and like I said - we only have one teacher!!! BTW - economics is social studies.
A lot of business programs have been phased out since we've all been in school.

Get out! That used to be the upper crust of the school district. The "hounies" would drive up in their 78 Montes, etc. to Burger King on lunch break and here would come the Kennedy Kids in their Land Rovers, BMW's, etc. Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

I went to Calhoun!

Honestly-- taking classes with Mr. Pucci helped me figure out what I wanted to do as a career.. As much of a character as he was-- he made us learn..

ETA-- were you in DECA? I loved DECA-- I actually think about going to teach marketing too and being a DECA advisor.. I was a state finalist one year!!

Re: Do high schools have Business Teachers

Sharon - don't get me wrong - there definitely is the Land Rover, BMW people - but much more diverse now economically than it used to be. I think that's also due to the fact that the school borders have been expanded. This is just not "South of Merrick Road" students anymore.

BTW - I went to the Calhoun Jr Prom in 1990!Chat Icon

I took marketing, accounting 1 and 2 in HS and got college credit for all 3. We had business clubs and DECA. There were at least 2 business teachers in my HS.

Yes she's right. A LOT has changed in a few years. Since spec. ed. students are now included in regents courses some of the courses (math) that we had one year to complete have been extended to two and even three years. Of course this reeks havoc on other elective departments.

BTW: Economics, now that it is a NYS requirement for graduation is usually taught in the Social Studies Dept.

Her best bet would be to return to school and get a certification in math. There is an excess of social studies and business teachers out there.

Re: Do high schools have Business Teachers

I was just about to say that Cheryl. I was very involved in FBLA at my school and we had about 4 teachers back then. I took almost all of the business course offered and they have been the most beneficial to me in my real world.

One class was like Intro to Occupations and they gave you tests to see what you would like to do. And how to endorse checks, etc.

I also took Keyboarding, Business Law (use a lot now), computer (that was back with WP 5.1), Accounting.

I really think every school should have these courses. And i think evey kid should have to take an Intro to the Real world course about banking, check writing, etc. It's sad how when i went to college how many people did not have bank accounts or knew how to endorse checks.
