Do I have to still make an appt w/ gyno?
Hi all -
I was wondering how many of you that are seeing REs will still see your gyno for annual checkups. My RE did a Pap smear for me since he knew my time frame was coming up (Nov), it was fine thankfully.
so am I ok to forgo the gyno with all the b/w, sonos, etc I have done at the REs?

I don't know the real answer...but I have not been to a regular gyno since I've been going to the RE.

Re: Do I have to still make an appt w/ gyno?
I don't have ob/gyn either lol I went to one in july who was a nutcase lol so much for that :)
He claimed to be an infertility specialist, so I though maybe I would receive more personalized healthcare....but if I told you the story of what he spoke about with me,...you would realize he didn't have it 'together' :)
My Re office doesn't do pap smears....so in addition to seeing them, I would need a ob/gyn.
If yours does, donna, I wouldn't worry about it. Although, I think it's good to find one, who you really value and trust.

Re: Do I have to still make an appt w/ gyno?
I would DEFINITELY still go to you gyno for annual checkups. It's extremely important that you do. They do more then just a PAP smear. They check for breast lumps, cysts and breast cancer. Plus, if your PAP comes back abnormal, they are more equipped and educated on what tests should be run. This is especially important for women our ages because of the high likelyhood of us having HPV which has been linked with cervical cancer.

Actually ob/gyns are not more educated than Re's ...because reproductive endocrinologists are ob/gyns with 3 extra years of training. So...if you have an RE who is willing to do a gyn physical, then, I believe you are fine. If there is an issue of "cancer', then either one would have to send you to a gyn oncologist....

I would hope the Dr. would include that, but if they don't, definitely get a ob/gyn who does, or a mammography

I meant more educated with specifics to an abnormal PAP smear and generalized issues due to it being part of their everyday practice. I don't know if RE's do the same things that a GYN would do. I had to have a Colosopy and a LEEP which the RE I go to wouldn't do. They don't even want to do a PAP. I just think it's very important to have a through annual regardless of who does it.

Re: Do I have to still make an appt w/ gyno?
Undercover, I completely agree with you, thorough examinations are very important and since I believe you and I go to the same RE clinic....they won't do it there.
It's not that they aren't educated on it, they choose not to. I went to another RE clinic in manhattan who said I could get a regular gyn exam there, if I was to work with them.
It's a matter of choice for these doctors, what they want to deal with and not deal with.

Re: Do I have to still make an appt w/ gyno?
I would still go to your gyno for a yearly pap smear. I never thought of doing it, because I was in such good care with my RE, but they dont do pap smears. I had to get an updated pap in order to start my IVF cycle, so I had to go back to my gyno to get it done.

When we do get pg, do we see our REs for checkups or our reg OB?

Usually at 8-10 weeks the RE lets you go to the OB and that's it, you're done with the RE.
And ladies thanks for all of your responses, my RE does do PAPs though.

They kept me until I was about 8 weeks. They did blood and sono on me every week and once everything was OK they let me go back to my OBGYN. I really wanted to stay with the RE though - I felt better with them.
