do Job changes/lay offs worry you, now that you have a family/mortgage?
My DH got an AMAZING job offer (he was looking for PT work, but they offered FT, much for more money per hour!!!!)
He loves his current job (they even threw us a baby shower), but how do you pass up more $$, benefits, etc?
He could work just 3 or 4 days and be home more, no on-calls, no staying late without extra pay, I would not need to work, & we can get into a house.
But I am so scared of all the "what ifs". Like what if they lay you off or don't give you enough hours, and now we have a mortgage and baby.
Anyone else's DH make job changes? Does it worry you?

Re: do Job changes/lay offs worry you, now that you have a family/mortgage?
I just went through this recently.... my DH had his own business and got an opportunity and decided to take a new job (that was a salary & commission job! ) I was a nervous wreck!!! I don't deal well with change and being a SAHM his income is all we have. I stash money as much as I can as often as I can cause the what-if's make me sooooo nervous.

I think everyone worries about this to some degree. I know I do. DH and I are both fans of stability. We have salaried positions, we have been with our companies for awhile and both our offices are really busy so I dont worry a lot, but its always in the back of my mind. Thankfully we have a nice nest egg that could carry us through for awhile if something were to happen. Having a baby changes everything...We are now officially ADULTS

As a sahm, I always make sure we live well below our means.
At this point, we could still survive if Leo was to go wait tables.
So I really don't worry.
Also as a sahm, living on one income...if need be you always have the choice to add on an additional income if needed.
sounds like a great opportunity! (to bad its not Charlotte)

Re: do Job changes/lay offs worry you, now that you have a family/mortgage?
I do worry about it, especially because I'm in the real estate department of my firm and some have already been laid off. I'm just grateful that the partner I work for is a big money-maker so my position is more or less secure.
DH's company was sold when I was 4 months pregnant and was one of about 10 employees that was lucky to still have a job. I nearly had a nervous breakdown, but luckily the transition has gone well for him.
To be honest, being laid off is one of my worst fears and always has been. It's even worse now with the baby.

Re: do Job changes/lay offs worry you, now that you have a family/mortgage?
there isn't a day that goes by that i don't worry about this. This just happened to DH. They laid off all non-tenured teachers at his district which included him due to budget cuts. Fortunately he secured a new position two weeks later but I feel like in this economy and him not being tenured that this will happen every year. Which makes it hard for me to committ to an even bigger mortgage because while we could afford it while he is working, we couldn't otherwise. And that doesn't take into effect my job status which is secure right now but we're also feeling the effects of the economy so you never know!

Well, DH could be laid off today. He works for Bear Sterns so we all know what that means. They have all been on the stand by.
We do have a house and I just decided to quit my F/T job and only work P/T.
There are no guarantees even in the most stable jobs. DH and I always keep our resumes ready. I network as much as I can. So does DH. There is so much you can do. You can't control everything so we just go with the flow.
