Do Most Apartments Charge to have a cat?

We have had our cat for 4 years...in this apartment, and we have never had to pay for him,.

I just got the quote for Renewing our lease, and it is now charging 20.00 PER MONTH for the cat. Our rent is going up 50.00 total PER MONTH. OUr cat is declawed, neutered and has all his shots(vbets records too)....what would be the reason for this? he cannot scratch anything in the house, and is fixed...


I am SO P*ssed...I really did not want to move, but with the amount we pay for rent, we could probally BUY. But, we do not want to make RI our HOME, forever, and not in a position to move outta state at the moment.

i think a decent amount of places do charge- its just weird though that you've been living there for a while, and Now theyre starting to charge you for it

Maybe it's under new ownership? Or someone reported the cat? I know my friend lives in a complex and she pays $50 for the cat.

maybe incase the cat stains the rug from hairballs or decides to picket against the litter box? Just a thought. It stinks after all this time they r charging you.

that's the first i have heard of it. some places want a pet deposit for damages, but that is a one time charge. never heard of a monthly charge.

I have to pay 35.00 a month for my cat to be in my complex; there was no added 'security deposit'.

For a dog I think you have to pay 50.00.

Last time I was milling around the rental office I happened to see a letter that they are going to raise the 'pet prices' when people's leases are up. I"m happy we are not renewing.

They are blaming the pet price increases on the people who let their dogs run on the lawn and ruin the lawn. So they are saying they need to re-seed the lawn because of it and that we need to pay for it. (They would still need to reseed the lawn even if dogs werent running on it - its just a racket because they know people wont give up their animals)

But anyway, if thats really the case, raise the dog charge, not the cat charge; my indoor only cat is not ruining your grass...

my friend had to put an extra security deposit down for it, and I think pays a little extra per month.

Well, when I asked them, they said, sorry, we have to charge. I have been renting here for almost 5 years now, our rent goes up 30.00 each year, but nothing changes here..the "maintenance" is a joke, we have bene waiting four our bathroom sink to be fixed for 3 months, the lock on our mailbox lock has been dented for the past 2 weeks...but if we refuse to pay rent till somethins fixed, we will get charged 30.00 for a late fee, or a threat of eviction. I think we are going to have to move. But, its also hard to find a place that will allow our cat. he is declawed,, current shots, and neutered, and we refuse to let him go.

IF you end up moving, ask your doctor to write a letter saying that you or DH needs the pet to relieve stress and quote the Fair Housing Act. We did this so the board would allow our cat stay in the apartment.
