On a Friday night I am sure there will be a mix. I would say you can wear anything from jeans to a gown and not be the only one dressed as you are.

nope! I have seen many people (men and women) in jeans. I never wear jeans though. always trousers and a nice top.

I usually wear dress slacks and a fancy sweater/blouse. If I have really good seats, I might wear a cocktail dress.

It doesn't really seem like it anymore, especially during the week. I still like to though-I wear what I would wear to work-black pants, heels and a nice top with my black wool coat. Lately people wear everything, including jeans and sneakers.

I ususally dress up...not a gown but NOT jeans. I wear a nice pair of dress pants and a top or sweater and my DH would wear a pair of dress pants and a dress shirt, maybe a tie also.

DH and I hold season tix to the Met Opera. I dress a little nicer when we go there, but you wouldn't believe the range of dress! I've seen everything from people wearing sweats, to black tie attire.

Sorry, I don't know where I got Friday from.
I would stay away from a gown (although I doubt you were planning on wearing one), but other than that you can really wear what you want.

I still say nice slacks, sweater. It's easy enough to dress that way. You don't have to wear a skirt and heels, you can wear just some nice pants, nice top and comfortable shoes.

I think people SHOULD. But that's just me.
I remember seeing Les Mis a looooong time ago and EVERYONE was dressed up and fancy.
Now, in the summer, you'll see people in shorts and flip flops. 
I still try to dress-up a little.

Actually I find a lot of toursist go in, shorts, fannypack and all 
You can get away with jeans and a sweater, esp on a Tuesday. But I like to at least wear slacks and a nice top. It's really anything goes these days, but for me, I like to presserve the feelings of grandeur and elegance of a night in a Broadway house.
What show are you seeing>?

My take is this. It is a live show and it shows respect to the performers to dress. I always dress for ballet, opera, shows, symphony, etc. The only play that I did not dress for was Stomp, and that was a very good peice of advice to not wear something nice
