Do we need to file taxes for someone that died?
FIL just passed away. Do we need to file his taxes for 2007? How do we know if he already filed? He doesn't file jointly or have dependants. TIA!

if he got a w-2, 1099, etc., the taxes need to be filed. when u file them, just say that he is deceased

If you know who he always had his taxes done by, they will be able to tell you if he had them done or not. If not then your DH will have to have file them. If there is a refund then it will be paid to his estate. I had to do this with my Moms taxes when she passed away.

We know nothing. We don't know where he'd have a w-2, or if he gets his taxes done. We know NOTHING!

Did he work or collect social security? Someone is going to have to go through his papers and see if they find anything. A tax return will be required for 2007 and 2008 if he has any type of income. The 2008 return would indicate that he has passed.
I am sorry for your loss.

Yeah, I had to help with a few of these when I worked in an accounting office. You have to file a "last return". Collect all the tax info that was mailed and bring it to your accountant and they'll take care of it.

We have no idea where he kept anything. He has no files and things are just scattered about. We can't even get to his apartment (it's out of town) for another week or two. This is ridiculous!!!!!!

Do you know where he took his taxes to be done? They should have copies of his last few returns. That will help a little, at least you won't have to look for those.

Try calling the IRS and see if he filed. Sometimes if you get someone willing help they will give you the information without having POA or waiting to get some documentation for them to speak to you. I am also, almost postive you are able to obtain all his tax documents that had federal withholding on it.
