Do you associate a particular place / room / car with...
Do you associate a particular place / room / car with a really traumatic event in your life?
And now you can't bring yourself to re-visit such place?
I am having this problem w/ my home office. I received some really earth-shattering news in there, and now I just can't seem to bring myself to hang out in there. I just feel like something bad is going to happen again if I do.

Yes, I cannot visit the MOMA because I visited it during a very traumatic time in my life. I won't go back.
eta I also suffer from anxiety and panic...and I do this with a lot of things...Oh, if I say or do this, it will lead to this happening....I know how you feel ...

OMG...yes. I had something happen to me at my inlaws house and I have serious issues going there now. I cannot go into one particular room of their house b/c of it. Everyone thinks I'm crazy but the association is too much for me.

I can't get my legs waxed because I went years ago and the woman spilled the pot of hot wax on my leg and gave me third degree burns all over my calf.

Re: Do you associate a particular place / room / car with...
Absolutely!!
My father had a massive stroke 9 years ago. He just bought a new car that he LOVED less than a year before. I gave my brother my car and took over Dad's car but it upset me too much to drive it. Everytime I got in it it hit me... "Dad should be driving this, he loved this car, he'll never drive again " I had to sell a perfectly good and very reliable car because of the constant reminder.
At the same time I had to move back home and care for him. So many places in the house reminded me of the time that my dad was married to my stepmother and stepsisters when I was a teenager. They were a very disfunctional crew. So, after a few months I started repainting rooms, moving furniture and redecorating as much as I could so it didn't seem like the same house. You'd be surprised how paint can get rid of the "ghosts". It worked and I don't think of the house that way anymore.

This is a little different, but I associate an outfit. I wore my favorite yellow sundress on 9/11. After walking hours in it over the bridge and crying, it just hung in my closet. Never wore it again.

I am slowly doing this in that room now. I repainted over the weekend, and am putting things away in there now. I Don't know if it is helping me though. Maybe I just need more time...
Thank you for all of your responses though! It really makes me feel better to know I am not the only one affected by something like this!!!
