Re: Do you believe Mackenzie Phillips story
I can't decide if I believe her or not. It's so twisted.
However, I can tell you who I think doesn't believe her and that's Oprah. That interview was so weird. Oprah was so stand-offish to her and it just seemed like she didn't believe a word coming out of her mouth.

I can completely understand people not believing her, but if she were going to make something like that up, why wouldn't she just stick to molestation/rape. Claiming that it was consensual incest (for at least the later years), she must know will put her in a negative light in many eyes. I watched her on Oprah yesterday, and (yes, I know she's an actress) she looked completely believable.
I totally hear what you're saying.
I have a hard time believing her though. I think by her claiming she had a consensual sexual relationship with her father, she is *trying* to prove to anyone who will listen how sick she was and how messed up she was with all of the drugs. I'm not sure what she's trying to achieve but she's a sick sorry person IMO.

Re: Do you believe Mackenzie Phillips story
I don't know if I believe her or not. It's so sick, I can't imagine any father doing that.
If it did happen, why does she feel the need to voice it? I wouldn't want to incriminate myself or make my deceased father look any worse then he already does. She's bringing down her family and what about her son? She should of just kept it in her family and that's it. She wrote a book about it to make money, that's all. She doesn't give a bleep about other people that maybe going through this.
No doubt about it... she's a sick woman.

Re: Do you believe Mackenzie Phillips story
I don't, she is an addict who was arrested just a year ago for possession. She has problems, so my instinct is that it is a story made up to help justify her behavior all these years and to sell books. But then again, what do I know and do I really care? She won't be making any money off of me. It is just weird.

ITA. I was saying out loud, "Oprah is totally not buying your story...." I also think it's not a coincidence that Valerie Bertinelli wrote a telling memior about a year ago, got lots of attention (and I assume $$) and is back in the spotlight after her career took a nosedive.
The only thing that pushes me to the side of believing her is the fact that she is letting her son hear all of this. What mom would want her son to hear this at all, never mind have to deal with all the media attention it is bringing. Then again, if she is mentally ill, she may not have considered any of that before writing the book.

Re: Do you believe Mackenzie Phillips story
Im surprised at how many people think she is lying. And i think Oprah did believe her. I remember when the girl who killed her baby was on the show and you can tell Oprah was not buying her story. For this story I think she did.
Also, the sister said it was a believable. And even the statement from his wife at the time said she tht MP acted strange around her dad like she knew to much about him. She also denied the allegation but the fact that she picked that up shows that the Father - Daughter relationship was not normal.
It just seems believable like he treated his daughter as his friend. I just totally believe it.

My thoughts exactly. If all she was after was the attention, she could've just said he molested her for years, she didn't have to say she consented. So yeah, I believe her.
I tend to believe her for the same reason stated above. Although the news is certainly selling her book, so if she is doing this purely for mercenary reasons, that's beyond sick, but owning up to consensual incest with your dad as an adult? I think that goes beyond the profit motive--as others already said she could have kept calling it rape.
They were/are both people with serious substance abuse issues though, and anything can happen in that environment.

I believe her.
It's not the first case of incest, and sadly, it wont be the last. I remember reading The Kiss by Kathryn Harrison - about a consensual sexual relationship she had with her father for years - and I was just in shock.

Re: Do you believe Mackenzie Phillips story
i do believe her... why would u say something like that, if it wasn't true? i mean, it certainly doesn't paint her in a good light either. it was quite a disturbing story. i am looking forward to oprah today - to see people's responses and to hear what her sister has to say.

Re: Do you believe Mackenzie Phillips story
I believe it. After watching her on Oprah she had a lot of the classical signs of someone who is a victim of molestation. When talking about when the relationship became consensual she was talking to Oprah almost in a way to say that it was her fault that this happened. The more I listened to her I totally believe it went down the way she said it did.

Re: Do you believe Mackenzie Phillips story
Did anyone watch the follow up with her and Chynna today on OPRAH?
If you missed it and had any doubt about if this happened or not, try to catch the repeat at 7. It might change your mind.

I believe her.
I don't know if she should've shared in such a public way though.

Re: Do you believe Mackenzie Phillips story
I do believe her. Nothing shocks me anymore. There are sick people who dont always feel the way the rest of society does. They thought this was ok to engage in for whatever reason. Where the rest of us are sickened by it. I think drugs and a warped mental state can bring you to do many things that are normally considered "abnormal"

i saw it... i believed the story anyway and what chynna says makes sense. though it may have not went down 100% how mackenzie remembers it to, bc of all the drug interference, i definitely think it happened.

Re: Do you believe Mackenzie Phillips story
do i believe her?? Sure. Just like the other poster said, nothing surprised me anymore. Anything is possible in this world and there are lots of sickos to prove that.
Why she shared this information with the world is uncertain to me. Unless she is trying to warm people about the affects of drugs and sick people that try to take advantage of a person while using them....

I believe taking something like that to the grave will only keep her sick and prevent her from healing. Writing a tell all book about it was a bit extreme but definitely sharing it with a therapist or trusted confidant is necessary. This story certainly explains a lot about her troubled past.
