Do you ever buy a cocktail dress just b/c you love it
Even if you don't have an event coming up? I am 8 mos post-partum with DC#3 so am at a place in life where it is difficult to find flattering dresses that fit. I found a gorgeous cocktail dress a few days ago that fit but didn't buy it b/c I was trying to be sensible/frugal since we have no weddings or formal events coming up. BUT, I have not stopped thinking it for days which kind of says to me that I should go back and get it, right? But is it silly to buy it when we don't have a need for it? The reason I'm asking is b/c is it $$ for me but I need to invest a little more for dresses now that fit has become more of an issue.

Absolutely! There will always be an occasion coming up, and I hate having to run out shopping at the last minute for a wedding etc, because it's hard to find anything. If you can do it, go for it!

Yup! Actually, the post I put up with a picture of a green dress that I'm wearing to a wedding next week.......I bought that dress well over a year ago because it was on sale and I fell in love with it. I had nowhere to where it to, but then thought that two of our friends would get engaged soon and I could wear it to their wedding. Low and behold, that's whose wedding I'm wearing it to next week!!

When do you think realistically that you will be invited somewhere to go?
Or, can you and DH plan a special night to go out and wear it?
How trendy vs. classic is the dress?
If it is something pretty classic - little black dress - and you think you will eventually have something come up in the next year, go for it.
Otherwise, styles may change, your size/shape may change, or you may just grow tired of it before you wear it.
So I would look at it like that, I have bought dresses without a specific purpose but knew within a year I'd have a wedding to go to.

Get it and tell your dh to take you out somewhere nice! I feel like there's always an anniversary or birthday coming up.. But regardless, who needs a reason to go out for a fancy romantic dinner? Declare valentines day in April... hire a babysitter... and go celebrate!!!
Maybe even make a little weekend out of it and go on a weekend getaway. Hmm this advice gives me some ideas

Went back and got it last night  There will always be something.
Sales lady made me feel even better about the dress b/c she kept gushing about it while ringing me. She was so funny. "It's an Oleg Cassini" "That's the designer Nancy Reagan wore" etc You're getting such a great deal on it.

Glad you got it, if it was something you couldn't get off your mind, you should go for it, you only live once :)
I just bought a cocktail dress that I loved, I have no where to wear to yet but with coupons and certificates and in-store deals, I just got it for $4, I think I can swing that :)

Sure - but the only reason I'd be trying it on is if it was a crazy sale to begin with -
No need to go trying on cocktail dresses w/o an event to go to - for me anyway .......I hate dress shopping !!!

I will try but I'm really bad at posting photos on LIF ever since we got an apple computer. I used to know how to do it easily on a PC. Mine are always too high res.

found this online. It's the same dress but in B&W, mine is all silver which makes a big difference b/c i think it looks much nicer in silver. But this gives you the idea.
