Do you ever feel like every decision you make is wrong?

Maybe this is partly because of my pregnant state, but I feel like the decisions I have made over the past few months have just made me miserable. I quit the job that I had for 9 years. The job that frustrated me, but where I felt at home and the people that have been my family since shortly after arriving in NYC. I took a position that I have been nothing but unhappy in since I started a month ago. I sit at a desk all day and watch people pass by me without even acknowledging that I exist. I just feel lost and so not myself. I just don't know what to do. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.Chat Icon

You went from bartending to working in an office, right? I've never bartended, but I imagine it is a HUGE change in environment. It's only been a month- so I'd give it more time. Do you want to go back to bartending after the baby is born?

I sort of feel like that lately, too. I took a job, that I don't want to say I regret taking, but I've left and then screamed and cried in the car trhe whole way home on more than one occasion. For me the job is almost over and I took it as a learning experience about what kind of job I don't want. That just may be what this is for you. It's just someplace you realized you're not going to be happy. Maybe it's time to move on, and be more selective with the next job and realize what doubts you had going in and which ones panned out and what to watch out for.

First, Congratulations, I didn't realize you were pregnant!

I don't think you made the wrong decison, You might not be at the right place right now, but I think you made the right choice that will eventually help you end up where you belong.

It is probably better that you ar eno bartending while you are PG--too much on your feet, for the later months.

Is this just temporary until you have the baby?

I hate my job but dh has convinced me to do it. He reminds me of the big picture...gettin the heck out of ny and living in a place where its always summer!!

Soooo I sit at this desk and think of the positives like I have a wonderful family, my family needs this money to move, my family needs this money for a place to live, i need this money to get a new Gucci bag! Whatever it takes....

It is hard sometimes - I was just talking to my sister about this, you sometimes wish you knew if there was a grand plan and you could have arrows pointing you in the right direction. I think everything really is a learning experience, even if its to learn what you don't want. Hang in there - just know that everything overall will work out ans try to stay positive for yourself.

Thank you ladies you all have good points!!!

This is my thinking. The only thing that this job has going for it is that when I am further along I wouldn't be on my feet. I made in 2 nights ( roughly 12-15 hrs) what I make working 40 hrs. After the baby when I return to work it will probably be at night. DH works during the day and I stay here what I make just covers the cost of a babysitter.

Maybe I should look for some kind of compromise. Maybe like a hotel job. More structure, but some human contact. Plus it pays more.

I am so sorry to hear that you hate it here. Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

I can attest to how hard it is to leave the world of bartending - a completely social and active place to work - for an office where no one notices you & when they do it is to yell (well it is in my case anyway). It is incredibly difficult to bartend when you are anything past 4 or 5 mos. PG, and once you start to show it is bade b/c as you know, customers can be really judgmental.

If you are looking in a hotel, what sort of position would you be interested in filling?

Chat Icon I am sorry it stinks so much. Can you maybe hostess at your last job? I know the money is so different (boy do I know it) but maybe the atmosphere & the ability to sit will make up for it?

First off, congratulations!!! Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon That's wonderful news!!

As for your decision, you made a huge job transition. As someone who was recently pregnant, I think it will be much easier not to be on your feet while you are pregnant. I can't imagine bartending while being 8 months pregnant.

I think you have a good idea. Look for something else. There is a big range of jobs inbetween being a bartender and a receiptionist. Hospitality would be a great option. Good luck!!
