Do you feel American Idol is a...
Popularity contest or a singing contest?
Based on your choice, who do you think DESERVES to be the AI...Jordin or Blake?
To me, if its a popularity contest then it should be Blake, he has more teeny bopper fans. But if its a singing competition (based on the 2 remainig finalists only!) i think it should be Jordin.

Total popularity contest. If it wasn't, Melinda would be the winner, IMO.
ETA: Jordin should win, IMO, but Blake will probably win because of the popularity contest.

ETA: IMO I think the should re-evaluate the way the judging works. Maybe work it somehow like Dancing with the Stars does, where the Judges vote counts towards something.

I think it is a popularity contest and that is how it should be. The producers are in it to make money by selling albums made by the winner. If the winner isn't popular, he/she won't sell records.

Popularity contest.
And a ratings contest for Fox.
They market it as a singing competition, but if that were the case, you'd never have anyone sounding like Sanjaya making it to the top 20.

We have to remember its called "American IDOL" not "America's Best Singer."

Melinda can sing, without a doubt. But it is very difficult to market her. What genre would she sing? Can you sell her as a star? Can you put her with Christina, Brittany, Mariah, J LO, Avril? It isn't enough to be an amazing singer. You also have to be marketable in today's musical environment. In my opinion, that is why both she and Lakisha didn't make it to the final 2.

IMO I think Melinda was in a totally different league than Lakisha. I thought Lakisha would have been voted out alot earlier than she did.

Definitely Popularity....
I personally do not think that Blake can sing...he's very original though.....
And let's not forget that sometimes those runner ups become more popular than those IA winners......
I liked Melinda and Lakisha personally......

I agree with this as well. Lakisha wasn't in the same league as Melinda. But also, Sanjaya wasn't in the same league as any of the top 20.

I agree, Melinda is hard to market. But so was Ruben...and I think Fantasia was pretty hard to market, too. But I think they have their place. I'm not trying to sound like a "purist" or anything, I just think the best singer should win.

I see your point but realistically, how well did Ruben or Fantasia's CD's sell? Ruben's CD was a disaster, it sold way under expectations. Similar story with Fantasia. Winning AI doesn't MAKE you successful, it just guarantees that you will have a CD released.
Here is a rough break down of CD sales by past AI finalists. As of March 2007.
