Do you follow the rules of powdered formula?
I know it says on the canister that once a bottle is made and the baby drinks from it you must empty the rest. Do you guys really follow that? I feel like it's such a waste of formula. And since DS eats 4oz, id rather make an 8oz bottle for 2 feedings. what do u think?

I pretty much follow the rule - if an hour or so has gone by and he didn't finish it for whatever reason I would give it to him - but I wouldn't use it for two feedings!

Re: Do you follow the rules of powdered formula?
i follow the directions... i wouldnt make an 8oz bottle for 2 feedings
i make 4oz bottles during the day bc he eats anywhere from 2.5oz to 4.
at night he tends to eat 5-6 oz so i prepare 6 oz bottles for the night feedings.
if theres any leftover forumula i throw it away within an hr

Re: Do you follow the rules of powdered formula?
You're supposed to throw it away after an 1 hr, 1 1/2 hrs. max if they dont finish b/c of bacteria I definetely wouldnt make an 8 oz. bottle and use it for two different feedings.

I agree.
Maybe when DC gets a little older, but now I'd follow the rules

Re: Do you follow the rules of powdered formula?
I followed the rules. Certain things I don't like to mess with, and formula is one of them! I would usually make a pitcher of formula at the start of the day and then just pour out the bottles as I needed them. At the end of the day, any leftover formula was tossed. Did we throw out a lot of formula? Sure....but Lily never got sick from bad formula, so it was worth it!

Re: Do you follow the rules of powdered formula?
Actually my doctor said you can do that. We use the ready to feed formula and sometimes do that.

We used RTF most of the time, but I did this when we used powder too.

Re: Do you follow the rules of powdered formula?
I always followed what the can said. I hated to waste formula but I did throw it out if DD ate from it and didn't finish it. I wouldn't use an 8oz bottle for 2 separate feedings. Yuck! Would you want to drink from the same glass of milk you drank from 4 hrs. ago??? Kinda gross. Just make 4 oz. bottles.

Re: Do you follow the rules of powdered formula?
I was pretty anal about that. I didnt use powder but used RTF insread but the directions were similar.
I would only use a bottle for an hour and then toss it.
I still do that and DD is 5 months next week.

Re: Do you follow the rules of powdered formula?
Absolutely followed the rules! 1hour passed and I chunked that milk.
So itty bitty and so easily sickened I never once thought to keep the milk longer than indicated. I'd make smaller bottles 4oz, 2oz and keep those in the fridge (they last for a full 24hrs if refrigerated and not drank from) that way I had a spare and it snot like I wouldnt use those at some point in that 24hr window.

Re: Do you follow the rules of powdered formula?
i let the bottle go upto 1 1/2 hours instead of the 1 hour listed on the formula canister.... havent had a problem however, he gets his bottles straight from the fridge. When he was a newborn and we were warming to room temp in the cup of water we never went over 1 hour.......... too much stuff can grow.........
If they are eating the 4oz why cant you just make a bunch of 4 oz bottles at once? The shaken bottle untouched by the baby can last in the fridge upto 24 hours

Re: Do you follow the rules of powdered formula?
DD eats anywhere from 4-6oz a bottle. She goes to daycare so they throw out whatever she doesn't finish.
In the morning and her two evening bottles, whatever she doesn't finish is carried over to the next feeding - unless it's less than 2oz then I toss it.
DD is 4.5 months for the record.

Re: Do you follow the rules of powdered formula?
I follow the rules. Bacteria can get in the bottle in the unused portion. I never make more than an extra 1 oz or so...for example, my DS usually takes 7oz but occasionally 8 oz...so I make an 8 oz bottle usually.

Re: Do you follow the rules of powdered formula?
I mostly used RTF since that is only how it was available for a long time. When the powdered version came on the scene, I followed the rules. But, why don't you make a large pitcher of the formula and keep it refrigerated. Then make a bottle when Ian needs to be fed and give him a bit more if he needs it.

Re: Do you follow the rules of powdered formula?
Always follow the rules. Why would I want to give my baby any food contaminated with bacteria that can make her sick, if it can be avoided?

Re: Do you follow the rules of powdered formula?
You can premix a bigger batch. Babies just can't drink from it AND put back the leftover in the fridge.
Make the 8 oz. Use 4oz for 1 bottle. Make another bottle with 4 oz and put that one in the fridge. That's way it's ready to go for next feeding.
I remember some mommies used to make a pitcher for the day.

Re: Do you follow the rules of powdered formula?
Yeah, why not make 8 oz even in one bottle but empty 4 of it into another bottle? Why risk sickening your small baby?

same here. I make the bottle for one feeding and anything left over past 1 hour, I throw away.
