Do you have a decent paying job without a degree?
Just curious to know how many of us out there have decent paying jobs without a degree.

Re: Do you have a decent paying job without a degree?
I just received a job offer that pays more than an other position I've held, and I don't have a college degree. Its in the mid 30s.
I do have a CDA in Infant/Toddler education, but that's specialized in the daycare field.

Define "decent"..?
Cant speak for myself since I hold a grad degree, but my best friend dropped out SUNY Stonybrook after his sophomore year and went on to work full time in the IT field (Network Admin). He landed a job a few months ago for a systems engineering company in Farmingdale that pays $90K. He is extremely lucky given he got the job based on a contact (former co worker referred him).

Re: Do you have a decent paying job without a degree?
DH is self-employed and dropped out of college (his biggest regret). He for the most part is steadily employed and we can afford to own a small starter home on costly LI, so yeah, I consider us lucky too.

I make very good money for the level of education required to do my job compareable to much higher degrees.

Re: Do you have a decent paying job without a degree?
I had a good paying job that did not require a degree. By good paying I mean 50k+. I then obtained my degree and I did notice when I moved around I got more money because of the degree. The problem is what happens if you need to find different employment. It is really hard wo a degree. I changed careers and have three degrees but I remember the days that I did not have any and it was tough.

Re: Do you have a decent paying job without a degree?
Yup!
This is why DH feels so "stuck". He would love to give up his business and work what he calls a "normal" job many days, but who will even consider you w/o a degree?
I am sure with all of his experience, he could run many businesses with his eyes closed, but without that piece of paper you're pretty much screwed in this economy.

I have a PhD, DH dropped out of undergrad with a year and a half to go. He makes double what I make. It makes me want to cry sometimes.

DH makes about 1.5 times more than I do and he doesn't have a degree (and I do).

Re: Do you have a decent paying job without a degree?
I have my BA in sociology and for what, I don't know because the social service jobs that pertain to my degree leaves me with lint in my pockets. I really wish I had majored in something else but I am not even trying to go back to school- at least not now.

Re: Do you have a decent paying job without a degree?
my husband makes almost six figures and he only has a HS diploma... I, make SIGNIFICANTLY less and I have a Master's Degree.
But as a defense, I am in the same job I was in when I was GOING for my Master's Degree and just not ready to "move on" yet...

Yes, every year his job pays for his certifications - mostly Microsoft, Novell, and recently completed a program in VOIP (Voice Over IP).. He dropped out of college to work full time as a Network Admin for a local newspaper. He also freelances for a former employer and makes extra cash on the side (usually setting up servers for local companies all over the Island) and that pushes his income into the $100K+ category. Meanwhile, DH has a BA, and 2 Masters degrees (related to the IT field) but works for a school district and makes significantly less...

Re: Do you have a decent paying job without a degree?
I have a degree BUT I do not need it at all for my job. And I am paid decently. Granted- I wokred my way up to this position but the degree I have has nothing to do with it.
So it really depends on the field.

My supervisor has just his GED, never went to college, and makes almost $150K..... so it's possible.

Re: Do you have a decent paying job without a degree?
i had a very decent paying job w/ only a HS diploma.
granted i made 1/2 of what i could have made if i had multiple degrees but i wasn't one to complain with the salary i was receiving and the perks and year end bonus.
i left the job 6 years ago and have no regrets, the hours were long, lots of travel and too much stress.

Yeah, in Network/Systems administration IT certifications mean more than extended college degrees.
Daily I use items that are taught with certifications - I never use the items that I was taught for my Bachelor of Science. Sure, if I was going to work more on theory, such as artificial intelligence, that degree would be better than certifications but I'm just not there.
The college degree is a benefit - but not really mandatory. The certifications give you practical knowledge.

Re: Do you have a decent paying job without a degree?
I have a BS (literally, but to me it's worth BS!!). I also have a paralegal certificate which I obtained a few years after I graduated college. I have a pretty crappy salary, for LI standards anyway.
DH has a HS diploma and at times makes almost double what I make.
Go figure!
