Do YOU have a desk in your room?

A few years back, my many of the teachers took their big "teacher desk" out of their classroom. I swore I would never. I needed a space for my things. Well, 2 yrs. ago the layout of my room wasn't working for me so I removed it. It was the best thing i ever did. It was so big & took up space that could have been used in a much better way. I now use my kidney table (for guided reading) as my "desk" and have one of those rubbermaid drawer things behind it w/ my supplies that were in my desk. I love it and it got me to thinking, do you have a desk in your room?

Yes, and I love it. The teacher prior to me used the kidney table, too. For some people using the kidney table solely works, for others, the table becomes their desk and no longer has the function. Plus, the kids have their space (their desks), I have mine.

Lots of people in my building have done the same. I havent yet. For some lame reason, it is hard for me to let it go. Chat Icon

I definitely think my kidney table could work just as well with a little storage thing, but I just havent made the leap.

I have a desk, but it's a very, very small one, shoved in the corner. I need a place to go that's "kid free" sometimes. Chat Icon

Re: Do YOU have a desk in your room?

I have a desk in one of my classrooms. I am in 4 rooms but I only have a desk in one. But that's my home base.

Re: Do YOU have a desk in your room?

I teach in a high school, and in both of my rooms there are TWO teacher's desks! One for each teacher who's in the room. It's very cluttered-looking but I guess necessary (we need a place to store make-up worksheets, cutting slips, supplies, etc.) Well, I just found out that I'm sharing a room with 2 other teachers, and they're talking about putting a 3rd Teacher's Desk in there for me. There won't be any room for students to walk in! I'll have to conduct class from the hallway. Chat Icon

Re: Do YOU have a desk in your room?

I also share with another teacher and we have two desks in the room. The only problem is that if our classes are large and we need to add extra student desks the room becomes VERY cluttered. But, our school is overcluttered and there really isn't any other solution. I couldn't imagine not having a desk (I teach JH/HS so the kidney shaped tables aren't an option).

Re: Do YOU have a desk in your room?

we are not allowed to have one - and frankly i think it succks

in my situation esp this year and next with our school being remodeled our students will be in our rooms for preps and lunch that means ALL day. We (teachers) dont really have any place to go to get work done, if i had a desk i could sit there and get stuff done, since i dont, im constantly moving around to get out of the kids way and trying to find a spot SOMEWHERE to do work.

I have my own desks in the two collaborative English classes, and I share a desk in my RR (in there for one period, no biggie).

I removed the desk from my room last school year. I never used it and it just accumulated papers. When I removed my desk I opened up the room and created more space for my class library. It was the best thing I ever did. Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

Re: Do YOU have a desk in your room?

they tried to convince us that 'good teachers' don't use desks around 5 years ago. Chat Icon a few people actually fell for it and about a year later were begging for a new desk, but they wouldn't buy them one.

i actually have 2 teachers desks in my room and they fit just fine. i need a place for my personal and professional things, and my drawers lock so i can store things.

i can't imagine not having one.
