Do you have email that parents can send to?
My sis is a teacher in Longwood, and she has a school email account, and she loves being able to send one email out to every family, correspond with parents, etc. Every year, I ask at the Open House if DS's teacher has email, and they always say no. (I'm sure they have an in-house account, but not that the parents can send to).
I often have a really quick question or comment that I would like to just email at 10pm or later. I definitely don't want to call during the day, and handwritten notes are a pain.
I really hope our district has it when he starts getting into the higher grades. He's in 2nd now.

Re: Do you have email that parents can send to?
My school does not have a policy but I send home a letter early in each school year with my contact info- email and cell number. I also use an online grading program that has a message feature, which goes to my email. Parents seem to use this the most, because they see grades and assignments and have questions.
ETA- my students also have my email because it is posted in my room. I get a surprising number of emails during vacations.

Re: Do you have email that parents can send to?
We are told that our emails are public, so we give them out (work email). That being said, I've only received about 3 emails total from parents, but understand your point. We are always told to be careful what we put in writing, but if your questions are general, I don't see an issue. If it's something you write about and the teacher feels better calling, at least you got the question out when you needed to.

Definitely understand the potential issue of having things in writing, but if I'm at work when I remember something, or I'm awake at midnight, it would be nice to just email. Even if the teacher wanted to call later, or send a note in DS's backpack.
I know that teachers are busy all day, and only have a few minutes here and there to make calls, so I'd hate to call during the day and interrupt a class, or a prep period just to ask "Did DS tell you he was up late last night, so that's why he may not be focusing in class?"

Re: Do you have email that parents can send to?
My dd's teacher told us that it's better to email her than call. Something about all the teachers having to share one phone in the office. And she responds back to emails quickly, I've always gotten a response back that day or the next.

I totally agree with what you're saying...for things like you described, I would love emails..even if not for those things..just lets me know I need to get in touch and you can let me know that when it's convenient for you to do so..

Re: Do you have email that parents can send to?
Wow our parents email all day, simple things like how they are getting home that day usually. We also send out biweekly electronic newsletters about what is going on in the classroom with pictures. I can't imagine not having email contact with a parent.

Same with us- and I actually prefer having things in writing- I am always very mindful and I feel it's easier to support myself because I have had parents misinterpret things I've said (or even fabricate them ) so I prefer email. And I have no issues dealing wtih messages at 10 pm, but I would never make or want to receive a phone call at that time.

Re: Do you have email that parents can send to?
both work and my home districts use email A LOT!
at work we are required to check our email 2 times a day (morning and afternoon) and have a 24 hour time limit to respond.

Re: Do you have email that parents can send to?
I prefer when parents email my DOE email. Yes, I like hand written notes, too, because I get them 1st thing in the morning, but emails are also such a breeze compared to the phone.

Re: Do you have email that parents can send to?
We have a work email. Like PP wrote, I tell parents it's better to write me an email than to call. It's difficult to get to a phone during the day (sorry, not using my cell so they can save my number). I always respond that day or the next.
Although I prefer using email, it can get annoying because parents will write about anything and everything. They'll send me messages and ask me to relay it to the student like "Can you tell Johnny the dog is fine? She pooped and feels better." No joke, that really was an email I received.
Check your district website. Our email addresses are posted on there.

I prefer e-mail for all of the above reasons. I like to have a written record of exactly what I said. I'm also mindful to "just state the objective facts"
I get to my desk at 6:30 am and usually send a few. Last year, I taught a girl who was on the autism spectrum and the mom and I sent daily e-mails first period. She was on her Blackberry on the LIRR.
I don't have a phone in my room and calling is a pain when you only have 40 minutes at a set time of the day to call. It usually turns into a game of phone tag for both teacher and parent. I've only had one issue with a parent this year. She was not available during my prep periods (she drives a bus) but "isn't comfortable with the technology of e-mail".

This is it in a nutshell. Our phones don't make outside phone calls, we can't make calls on our cells while the kids are in the room, there are probably 3 phones in the whole school to share, you are limited as to WHEN to use them, and when you only have 40 minutes to plan/copy/clean/grade, etc, you really don't want to waste time trying to make a phone call.
And personally, the last thing I want to do after I dismiss the kids is make phone calls. Don't get me wrong, I stay after and do work, but I really don't want to stay to make phone calls. Email is so much easier!

Re: Do you have email that parents can send to?
I created a Yahoo account that I use just to communicate with parents. I have access to it on my BB and I always respond the same day or the following day.
eta: I prefer e-mail to phone calls in most cases. However, if there is a serious issue, I will use the phone instead.

Re: Do you have email that parents can send to?
all our teachers are required to use email and must respond within 24, same as a phone call. As a counselor at a high school with over 800 kids, I LOVE email. I tell parents on my voicemail that I probably won't return a phone call until the end of the day, next day max but an email I return within two hours. This has decreased my phone calls from 10-12 a day to 2 or 3. I use it to post scholarship information to parents and students, communicate important events, all sorts of stuff. I can't imagine NOT having it or using it.

Re: Do you have email that parents can send to?
We have an email address through our school district that we are encouraged to give to parents.
I actually prefer to do all of my parent communication via email--it's good to have a running record of conversations I've had with parents.

same... i love when parents contact me over e-mail. it's a quick way to communicate because otherwise, it's phone tag all day... i only have my prep. or my lunch to make calls. yes, there are some things that warrant a phone call, but i much prefer e-mail for routine things or to answer their questions or concerns.
in my district, staff e-mails can be looked up on the website... also the e-mails follow a very easy format- teacher's first initial and last name so most parents figure it out. i also give it to my parents at the beginning of the year and it's on class newsletters, etc. throughout the year. if anything, i wish more parents communicated with me via e-mail.
ETA: i am really surprised your district is not sharing teacher e-mails. maybe when you addressed the question to the teacher, she thought you wanted her personal e-mail??? i would bring this up with the PTA or administration in regards to asking what the school district's policy is on e-mail. maybe it's just me, but i can't imagine NOT wanting the convenience of communicating with a parent this way.

Is it a public school? I would call principal and ask the directly. I honestly do not believe in 2011 a school does not have email. This is how I communicate with my colleauges and parents everyday.

We have email and I love it! Parents contact me and I either write back or call back (depending on WHAT I have to say)...... Most parents prefer to communicate this way.
