Do you have to pump as long as you nurse?
In order to maintain your milk supply, do you need to pump for 15-20-minutes, or does it not matter? I'm a lazy pumper - will normally do 5-7-minutes to get my 4-5 oz and call it a day, but when I return to work do I need to pump longer each session?

You should pump to at least make up for missed feedings- otherwise your supply will decrease. Are you getting 4-5 oz total in a *lazy* session, or 4-5 oz per breast? How much do you get if you pump the full 20 minutes?

I usually pump for 15 minutes at a minimum - or until the flow stops - I've heard that it won't decrease you're milk supply if you pump for less time - just if you pump less frequently. I'm being quite cautious because I don't want to lose my milk supply!

I get 4-5 oz total from my lazy session after feeding DS - which can be as little as 3-4 minutes. I've never actually pumped for 20-minutes

if your getting 4-5 AFTER a feeding- that is GREAT! rather than "watch the clock" try to aim for that amount from each breast when you are soley pumping at work (or at least pump until the flow stops).

I think that's why I get lazy about it - after 5 minutes it seems like it's just a random drip so I'm pretty much done emptying. For the times I don't nurse it takes only about 2-3 minutes to get 5oz or so.

I do the same thing. My LC told me you are supposed to pump for 2 minutes after the last drop. I get way too impatent for that. Since I started working and I am afraid of losing my supply, I typically pump for about 10-12 min but most comes out in the beginning anyway. So far my supply hasn't gone down.

Hmm, that's annoying but I guess I'll have to do that when I'm back in the office. I'm only PT over the summer so hopefully the mix of pumping and nursing keeps me going. I think it'll be the end of the road for me once I'm FT in the fall (which is longer than I ever intended to do it).

Re: Do you have to pump as long as you nurse?
I only pumped when I missed a feeding and just pumped till I felt "empty", usually about 5-7minutes I did not follow the "rules" of pumping because I always had a very good supply.

Re: Do you have to pump as long as you nurse?
My DS has been in daycare for a little over a month and my supply has started to diminsh. NOt happy. i still manage to get 6 ounces per pumping, but I was getting 10 ounces 3 weeks ago. I pump according to how much I get, not time.
