Do you HAVE to use a separate little potty for potty training?

Or can you just use the potty ring that goes on the regular toilet?

I really don't want to get one of the separate little potties-- I have no room for it (won't fit in the bathroom) and it kind of grosses me out...I'd rather her learn on the big toilet.

But is that practical? She does tell us before she poops now (most of the time), but we haven't actually started showing her the potty seat.

I think as long as you get a step stool and she can navigate herself onto the regular toilet, you will be fine. Chat Icon

ITA. DS started using a separate potty, but after a while, he told us he'd rather use the regular toilet. With DD, we'll probably just use the ring on the regular toilet.

I think its better NOT to have the separate potty - then she's not in the habit of only using that, which makes life easier when you're out.

I trained Ella without a potty - just a ring on the regular seat. Now she'll use any toilet, with or without the ring.

never used a little potty seat. We went straight to the ring on the toilet.

We are doing the potty seat for the toilet. I personally feel that it will be one less transition for her-plus I hate the idea of cleaning out a potty chair.

We used the ring on the toilet for DS. He would not use the ring to pee though. He wanted to stand up from the start!
