Do you keep "extra" food in your house?

At my parents' & in-laws' houses there is pretty much always something non perishable around & usually meats & vegatbles to make something.

For me & DH, we buy exactly what we need for the meals we are going to eat during the week & usually go out on weekends. And those weekday meals usually only serve 2-3 people, most times.

I feel like I should be mroe prepared for people to stop by, but I don't wnat o waste food or money. I also don't have a lot of cabinent space.

What do you other households of 1 & 2 do?

There's always plenty of food and pantry items. DH is a big kid so there's always plenty of snacks. I tend to just buy what proteins we need as we need them, but I stock and freeze if its on sale.

We only buy what we need. We used to buy extra and it would go bad and we'd wind up tossing it or worse we'd eat extra. I can't have chips or anything in the house either. I'll eat it if I know it's there! Chat Icon

I barely have enough for myself.

I just make sure I have enough water/diet pepsi/OJ/alcohol. That's it.

Re: Do you keep "extra" food in your house?

Yes!! We keep a well stocked pantry and a well stocked freezer... (I have a fear of running out of food!) I may not have fresh veggies all the time, or other "frige" items, but there is always ingredients to make something in my house.

Heck - I'm terrified that I'll not have enough dog food that I always buy 2 or 3 bags at a time. DH complains all the time that if we did ever run out of food, we'd at least have dog food to eat! Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

Our fridge and stove are so just for decoration....lol We eat out every meal.

Our fridge always has soda, water, and wine/champagne.

And we also always always have Ice Cream and oreos in this place.

Re: Do you keep "extra" food in your house?

we could live for months on what i keep in the house... i take after my parents. the freezer & cabinets are always stocked and i have shelves in the garage of "extra". if you run out of one in the kitchen, there is always a backup in the garage - like tuna, salad dressing, pb, coffee, you name it. i do the same thing with paper goods, laundry detergents, bathroom items - everything.

Re: Do you keep "extra" food in your house?

Not really.

I love to cook, but we don't overstock the joint. At most we'll have a few extra boxes of pasta and some extra cans of soup because we scored it on sale. My attention span with food is not very long...so stocking up on stuff means I will be bored of it - quick!

However...we never ever run out of booze, toilet paper, or cat food and litter. Those are essential to everyday life.

Re: Do you keep "extra" food in your house?

I have a ton of extra food at home, several boxes of cereal, cans of vegetables, jars of PB, plus fruit for the week, boxes of pasta, cans of soup, tuna, oatmeal, like 10+ containers of yogurt in the fridge, frozen meat, etc.... like 3 cabinets full of food plus the fridge/freezer are full... and it's just the 2 of us! If we got stuck here for 2 or 3 weeks, we'd be fine. I had no idea this isn't the norm!!!!!! Everything gets eaten before it gets bad or expires, so it's never a waste... but we do stock up.

Re: Do you keep "extra" food in your house?

I stock up on things when they are on sale, so our house is always well-stocked. I keep non-perishables in the basement. There is extra cereal, peanut butter, salad dressing, rice, apple juice, and other stuff down there.

I always freeze meat so that I have it on hand when needed, and I stock up on frozen veggies when they are on sale.

Re: Do you keep "extra" food in your house?

We do have extra stuff in the "nonperishable" category, but as far as fresh foods go, I'd definitely need warning that someone was going to be coming over so I could buy extra food!

Our house is always stocked up, you would definitely think we had more than 2 people living here for what we have in our freezer and cabinets, plus we have a freezer in the basement that is stocked

Re: Do you keep "extra" food in your house?

No. DH is the cook & very picky. He only eats extremely fresh food & since at the present time we live in Brooklyn (1 block for our supermarket, fish store & bucther) it works out okay.

We go to the supermarket every Sunday to purchase essentials. (pantry items, milk, juice, etc.)
As far as meals go I will go to the butcher or fish store on my way home from work to pick up what we are making that night.
