Do you know any foreign languages?

Just wondering. I wish I knew Spanish better. I took it all through HS, so I know some rudimentary Spanish, but I can't converse in it.
I tried teaching myself some American Sign Language, but I stopped after a while.

Re: Do you know any foreign languages?

Yes, I'm fluent in Hebrew and know some French. My in laws are Argentinian and speak to my kids in Spanish, so I'm slowly learning Spanish, too (I'm Canadian, so I never learned Spanish in school.)

Re: Do you know any foreign languages?

German is my first, and I still speak and read it.
English my second.
Spanish I studied in Jr and Sr. High School, am rusty but can get by understanding it and speaking it not too badly.

20 years of working for a Japanese company, I know only a few phrases.

Re: Do you know any foreign languages?

Yes, I would say that I'm proficient in German (so C1 level).

I took French in high school and I can get by in France.

I've never taken Dutch lessons, but I can understand a lot of things when it is spoken or written. I can't answer back, though Chat Icon . It's somewhat like a cross between German and English.

I'm learning some Bavarian since being here, but I don't think that counts, lol.

Re: Do you know any foreign languages?

I speak a little Polish and German from my father's side.

My mother was born in Italy but we never really picked it up. She rarely speaks it.

I have coworkers who were born in China, and lived there for many years, and even THEY have a hard time with Mandarin! Chat Icon

Re: Do you know any foreign languages?

I used to be SOOO good at Spanish.
I took AP Spanish in HS and scored native speaker on the AP exam.
But after HS I never took it again and I lost almost all of it.
They say for every year you don't use it, you lose like 50% of it.

I'm pissed I didn't keep up with it

Re: Do you know any foreign languages?

No and I wish I did. I also tried to teach myself American Sign Language. I got pretty far and fell off.

I took French for 4 years in School and lost it all.

I always have so much going on, that I don't have the brain power to dedicate to a new language. Maybe one day. if so, it will be Spanish. And I will continue w the sign language as well.

PS
When I worked for a Brooklyn printer, I was the only one who could type in Russian and Hebrew. I had no clue on what I was writing, But I was able to type full stories and advertisements. Go figure! lol

Do you know any foreign languages?

I speak Italian. I took Spanish in HS, and since it is very similar to Italian I can get by with reading it and having basic conversations in it.

I would love to learn French

Re: Do you know any foreign languages?

Grew up speaking Spanish as my parents immigrated here 3 years before I was born and then majored in French in college. Tried to teach myself German Italian and Russian but only know a few phrases. I took Latin in HS so felt that helped a lot .

Re: Do you know any foreign languages?

I speak fluent Russian, as it is my first language. I learned English when I moved here right after graduating High School. I used to speak decent French, but it is now all forgotten since I haven't practiced it in decades.

Re: Do you know any foreign languages?

I am okay with Spanish. I took it from K to 11th grade. I also took it for a semester in college . . . I magically placed into Spanish 4, so I guess I wasn't terrible at it.

I know a few words in German and one through three in French from the old Muzzy commercials. Chat Icon

Do you know any foreign languages?

I lived in a Caribbean country for a few yrs as a child. Being so young at the time, I picked spanish up and was fluent within a few months. I attended an American school while there, and took Spanish classes. I was learning to read and write in Spanish too but then we moved back to the stated. I lost a good portion of it and when I started Spanish in Jr I struggled b/c it was proper and I had only learned "street" Spanish. I wish the schools started language earlier. DH and I have been trying to teach ourselves Italian over the years - our dream us to move to Florence when we retire. We wanted to raise our kids speaking Italian buy they both are speech delayed and I think it's a bad idea to try and incorporate another language. Maybe in a few yrs when they are older.
