do you ladies see a difference between
"corrective" plastic surgery (ie lipo, nose job- not implants) and getting braces?
I think braces are pretty common place and don't really have a stigma but I feel like people that get plastic surgery are judged differently....
any opinions?

i dont see a difference and i think if you want to feel better about yourself, and braces or plastic surgery make you feel more confident and attractive, then go for it!

There's definitely a difference... with a boob job, nose job, etc, you are performing an invasive surgical procedure whereas braces are merely a device you attach to your teeth and is only temporary...

I see the difference in terms of the ones you named are significantly more invasive than getting braces. All can be considered medically necessary.

Re: do you ladies see a difference between
Braces are not only for cosmetic purposes - at least not in children. They are used to correct the growth of teeth and often serve to improve a palate so child can speak correctly. Sometimes a child wears braces to make room for teeth that have not yet grown in. That could completely mess up jaw growth as well I would imagine.
I think braces are not as stigmatized for that reason. I was not put in braces when I should have been. My teeth are not crooked, but my bite is narrow as is my palate. My teeth do not line up from top to bottom. Nobody notices unless i point it out.
My dentist informed me that I cannot get them now despite my desire to make these corrections. It is not a simple procedure as an adult.

I wasn't running the risk of dying or possible death when I got my braces.

Re: do you ladies see a difference between
I don't mean medically speaking. Obviously using a scalpel to cut open your face or having a tube suck the fat out of your body is more taxing than getting braces...though I've never even had a cavity in my life, but I hear dental work can be quite taxing as well...
I was more referring to attitudes about it...looking at Preshy's answer, I think she gets what I was looking for, though I may not be explaning it right.

Re: do you ladies see a difference between
To me there is a HUGE difference. Braces help you to not get cavities and improve your oral hygiene. Dental issues later in life can be very painful and sometimes infections can spread to other areas.
I dont think its too bad to get a nose job to correct a deviated septum (sp?) which might improve breathing, sense of smell, snoring etc. Breast reduction could also improve your quality of life.
But things like breast enlargement and LIPO - I cant really understand putting yourself at such risk for these types of surgery...... It just seems kind of shallow and I think that's why some people look down on it.

I just got my braces off 2 years ago after having to wear them for four years it was nothing cosmetic for me either

Re: do you ladies see a difference between
My dad ended up with full dentures at 36 because his teeth were so bad, but when he was a kid braces were more of a luxury. I think there is a difference between that and something like a nose job or lipo (though I do know someone who wanted a nose job, but it was also medically necessary because of a deviated septum)

i want to argue the shallow part for a sec.
in my opinion, what makes one person feel good about themself vs another differs depending on the individual
lets say you were obese and you lost 200 lbs, however your stomach sagged and although your weight is healthy, your body still looks very unattractive in a bathingsuit? is it shallow to want to change that? i personally dont think so
or what about people that have such small or large chests all their life they are tormented about it...thus have no self confidence? but their breast enlargement/reduction gives them a reason to feel good about themself - is that shallow?
i think shallow is the wrong word - i know alot of people that had surgeries and are different, happier people, because of these procedures. i just dont think the word shallow is fair. shallow is a person that lacks depth of intellect, emotion, or knowledge. i dont think wanting to feel better about your looks makes a person shallow imho.
not trying to be rude but wanted to make a point.

ah Missy, you're a smart one.
this is what I was getting at. I think people get wrapped up in the idea of these things being for "beauty" or "vanity" and maybe forget that there is a huge emotional/psychological aspect to it.
and it seems like sometimes people may be inclined to pass judgement on people for wanting to feel more attractive...I'm not sure.
ps...I have never had any dental work (not even a filling, ever...knock on wood) OR plastic surgery, but I wouldn't rule any out.

No - I understand what you are saying - and maybe there are different degrees to which i think that plastic surgery is "shallow"... But ultimately using invasive surgery soley for the purposes of changing your appearance to me IS shallow. It doesnt necessarily mean that the person is completely shallow but the act of certain cosmetic surgery IS shallow. I dont know if I am explaining this well....
And I also hate the fact that someone could be "tormented" by physical characteristics beyond their control. I am flat chested - i was made fun of all thru college, but I would never consider invasive surgery to change that.... Instead I worked on my self esteem to not care what others think of me....
I just want to add - I do endure pain for my physical appearance - I get waxed and I have had cosmetic dental work done - and I think that these things are somewhat shallow too. I dont mean shallow as a really harsh word the way you are describing it so maybe that is the disconnect.....

i know what you mean
im glad you were able to work through the body issue and appreciate what god gave you! but for many it is not that easy...and i dont look down on anyone for wanting to make themselves happier when they look in the mirror
even michael jackson...i persoally think he looks like a freak, however he may look in the mirror and love what he sees
which brings me to my point- if you love what you see when you look in the mirror- no matter if altered by a doctor or not- then you have more confidence and be happier

I'm not sure where I said that I look down on people who choose to get cosmetic surgery so I really do not think you know what I am trying to say.....
ETS: I just want to add that you completely twisted what i said... I think you should go back and re-read my post.
