Do you mind being watched?
"October 3, 2007
Mayor Cites ID of 2005 London Bombers as Why NYC Needs Cameras
Mayor Bloomberg returned from London convinced more than ever that NYC needs to emulate the British capital's "Ring of Steel" surveillance system, which places cameras throughout the city to observe and help identify people in real time. He said that the danger of terrorism necessitated a similar system in New York, where plans are underfoot to install thousands of cameras and license plate readers in downtown Manhattan. "In London, they have two or three cameras on every single subway car, they have two or three cameras on every single bus."
Bloomberg cited the 2005 London Underground bombing that killed 52 people when suicide bombers set off explosives on crowded trains as a reason for the surveillance. Authorities were able to identify the dead terrorists within hours of the attack. The Mayor said that New Yorkers need to get used to being watched all the time, and that they already practically are watched constantly by private surveillance cameras. "I do think that in this day and age, if you think that cameras aren't watching you, you are very naïve." He added that the first thing police often do in a crime investigation is to check such cameras' recordings.
According to the Daily News, the MTA has a contract with Lockheed Martin to install 2,000 cameras in the MTA's network. NYC Transit has already installed 1,600 cameras in 70 subway stations (almost 23 per station!), with funding allocated for another 70 stations to be outfitted."

I don't think I much care if the cameras were there or not. If it will help, great. Some of the things London has been able to do with those cameras is pretty cool.

Re: Do you mind being watched?
I don't mind, but in the article they mention that "Authorities were able to identify the dead terrorists within hours of the attack". Maybe I don't fully understand, but what's the benefit of that? Most terrorist organizations announce what they did anyway. It's part of their "terror". We have the IDs of the terrorists who were on the planes from 9/11, without cameras. It didn't help anyone.

Re: Do you mind being watched?
I'm not doing anything wrong so I don't mind at all. IMO, in todays society and the world we live in, if these are the steps we need to take to ensure that our country is safe then so be it. The way I see it is the only ppl that are going to protest are the ones that are doing something they shouldn't be and they don't want it caught on film!

Re: Do you mind being watched?
In all seriousness, I give it a week before the ACLU starts publically speaking about this.

Re: Do you mind being watched?
By the way, they already have the license plate reader on a police car in Long Beach. Within 15 minutes of installing it, they got a hit against the database for a car belonging to someone who had a warrant out.
The technology this thing employs is fascinating. And the implications, especially in cases of Amber Alerts and things like that are amazing to consider.

Why? It's not even remotely illegal as far as I can tell.
Anyone can actually tape you in public - you don't have a right to privacy when you're walking around in public places or driving your car on public roads.

Well, I wish them a fun time wasting their time and money. I love when they sue over rights that don't exist.
I especially love it when it costs the government our tax $$$$$$$$ to defend.

Re: Do you mind being watched?
The ACLU (and this is just a guess of mine) will somehow argue something along the lnes of saying... Will the camera's not be able to see thru the window's of stores? B/c in stores we get to assume we are on private property or wll it not view into my car because I own my ar and therefore, I am NOT in public.
Somethings (well a lot ovf things) hte ACLU does bothers me because they do them to the nth degree but I try to remember that the ACLU is just trying to fight for the rights that the amendments grant me.
