Do you need a permit for a fence
Just to fence in the yard? We are under Town of hemsptead. Also, any idea how much the permit costs? We are having a fence installed the first week of May and don't want have any problems with the Aholes next door.

Hmmm... I don't know if you need a permit to install a fence. I am in TOH as well. In fact I need to have a small piece of fence installed and I am definitely not bothering to get a permit.
I think the permits and issues with fences relate more to stuff like pools (like the fence has to be a certain hight and distance from the pool). Etc.

Re: Do you need a permit for a fence
It depends. There is a code and as long as the fence is within that code no permit needed.
We are also in TOH and did ours about 4 years ago, so I don't totally remember, but I know that since we are on a corner if we did higher than a 4' fence within so many feet of the edge of the property we would have needed a permit. And we had to stop the fence totally within a certain footage of the sidewalk or get a permit.
If you call up the Building Department at (516) 538-8500 Office Hours: 8 a.m. to 4:45 p.m. they should be able to send you what the rules are.

Re: Do you need a permit for a fence
Are you replacing a fence? or is this a new fence? On our NY house, being that we were replacing a fence, we didn't have to file for a permit, because one already existed for a fence.
If you know that you def need one, then I would call up the Town of Hempstead (They may have a site where you could look it up) and you may be able to print it out.
It shouldn't be more than 50 bucks or so to do it. But don't tell them that you are having it put in already. They will get pi$$y if you dare tell them that you intend to put up a fence and THEN get a permit after the fact.
Good luck!
