Do you NEED to use a garbage can for the guys to collect?

We recently bought a home, and we have two garbage cans. But, I notice some people just put bags out at the curb for the men.

Do you NEED to put the cans at the curb for the men to take the garbage? We live on a semi-busy road, so I'd just rather they not get ran over since we work and it will be 6PM before we are home to bring them back up to the house...

I wouldn't think so but each town has rules on that kind of thing. How you should "present" your refuse so they will do their jobs. Chat Icon

We put four bags out to the curb this morning, no can, and they took them all.

I'd think it would be easier.

I just checked my town site (because I just had to ask here first! Chat Icon) and we have unlimited cans OR bags...So what's the benefit to having cans? Chat Icon So animals won't get in?

We use the cans because we usually have several smaller bags. I guess we could use one big bag for everything, but that would be putting more plastic into the landfills.

If you have a can with wheels, it's much easier to bring to the curb.

Yes, nothing like finding baby diapers or 'female' items strewn all over the road after a cat gets into it. Chat Icon (Happened to my old neighbor).

Yes exactly. We find our garbage cans knocked over and the lids popped off all the time. Those raccoons are pesky animals and they know exactly how to get into the cans if the lid isn't jammed on there tight!
The cans also serve to hold the bags that you put out before its actual pick up day - to protect from animals. Once the bags are in there, its easier (and neater IMO) to put them out by the curb.
We've had both on occasions when we've had more bags than will fit in the cans and our garbage guys take it all

Agree with what everyone said. Also, garbage on the side of your house looks nicer in a can than in a pile. We don't put the garbage out till the morning of pickup day to keep the street nice too. And it prevents the animals from getting to it.

I should mention that those four bags had packing materials in them, no food or household items, so there was no danger of animal damage.
