Do you notice things in OTHER people's homes?

Do you notice things like messy paint jobs? Bad spackle jobs? Outdated appliances? If a floor/shower needs to be re-grouted?

I never did. But now that I look at my own house, I see where all the little imperfections are, and I wonder if other people will.

I liken it to having your own wedding and then comparing it with other weddings you go to afterwards. Not necessarily in a bad way - but just knowing what goes into it gives you a better awareness.

Are you aware of these things in other people's homes? I actually go the other way - I'm always looking for inspiration from other people's houses. Chat Icon

I usually dont notice "bad" things unless it is messy or dirty. I always look around through for ideas now that I have my own home.

Re: Do you notice things in OTHER people's homes?

I love using other peoples homes for inspiration. Now that I do own a home, I do notice when things are messy or dirty. I have also become more inclined to notice other things in people's houses but mostly bc I compare it to what we have...

Re: Do you notice things in OTHER people's homes?

I may notice, but I definitely do not judge Chat Icon Now that I own my co-op, I know how expensive and time-consuming it can be to make home updates and repairs, so I don't think anything of it if the appliances are outdated or some work needs to be done. Similarly, I also know how hard it can be to keep a house clean and not messy, so a little mess doesn't bother me!

But, I am constantly worried that people notice the bad things in my apartment!

i focus moreso on the decorating. the variety of styles, tastes (and lack thereof) intrigues me. i notice the same on the boards as well.

Re: Do you notice things in OTHER people's homes?

I am oblivious to most minor imperfections AND perfections.

Unless something is obvious - a half painted wall, a pile of trash in the center of the living room or such - i am probably not going to notice it.

But I do notice EVERYTHING in my house. Okay - my house IS a wreck - but even the little things are noticable to me in my own house!

If a house is clean and orderly, then no.

But if a home is down-right dirty, I think it accentuates all of the other flaws.

Re: Do you notice things in OTHER people's homes?

Actually, yes, we do, but I guess that's also in large part because we did most of our own renovations for both homes, so we notice these things much more readily.

Re: Do you notice things in OTHER people's homes?

The one thing I do notice is a bad paint job. It's a big pet peeve of mine. Otherwise, I don't really notice out of date appliances or things like that (except in homes that i am looking to purchase Chat Icon )

ITA !! I never noticed anything until we bought a house and started painting & fixing it up. Sometimes when people are over I'll say "we still have to fix that, etc." and lots of people will say "I didn't even notice" so I just may be my worst critic Chat Icon

ita 100%... I know that most houses are usually a work in progress so I don't usually notice/pay attention to small details.... if someones house was filthy or really disorganized thats another story

Not really. It has to be REALLY obvious for me to notice.

I don't really notice anything bad but I do like to see how other people decorate their homes

Re: Do you notice things in OTHER people's homes?

Bad paint jobs, spackle jobs, any kind of wall issues pop out to me ever since buying our home.

And grout/tile jobs. Probably b/c we just did so many of these things that I can't help but notice.

My father is even worse. He will take us into restaurant bathrooms to show us the "crappy" tile job they did. Hhe just got finished helping us with ours, and doing my brother's bathrooms. He is not a professional, but very handy. So we laugh at how he always has to point out restaurant bathrooms/floors crappy jobs.

I have to stop doing this. I did that when my friend came over with her husband and we chuckled about some of the things that need to be re-done but that's why I started wondering if I just kept my mouth shut, if it wasn't noticeable. Chat Icon

Re: Do you notice things in OTHER people's homes?

I don't notice things in other people's houses nearly as much as I do in my own. Unless it's glaringly obvious.

Re: Do you notice things in OTHER people's homes?

now that we own our on house, I notice everything, good or bad. Of course my house has plenty of the good and bad too. Chat Icon I also have to stop pointing out things in my own home, because maybe some people won't notice if I don't say anything. Chat Icon But I also do look for inspiration too when I go to other people's houses.

Re: Do you notice things in OTHER people's homes?

I definitely notice more, but it depends on what's bugging me about my house at the moment. For instance, we replaced the door knob to the bathroom b/c the lock didn't work and it looks really pretty and then I noticed how all our other doorknobs are looking kinda shabby (metallic gold with the gold chipping off). Now I am obsessed with doorknobs! I notice everyone's, but especially my own. I am going to HD or Lowes this weekend and buying new ones to replace all the old ones. Honestly, the things I obsess over! Chat Icon
