do you prefer open floor plans or seperate rooms?

Our house had a pretty open floor plan, it was built in 1987 so the "contemporary" thing was in. We actually removed more walls to open it further. We love it & it makes entertaining(which we do ALOT) really easy. I wonder though sometimes if people prefer seperate rooms. Someday when we sell I don't know if it will be a positive or negative feature.
I always thought DH & I would buy an old home with small rooms & little stoage & restore it since that's what we love, but when we decided on this neighborhood we knew it wouldn't happen since the oldest homes here were only built in the 1940's.
I love my floorplan now, but I wonder what is more "popular"

We have "railroad" rooms so that you can talk to people from the sun room through the living room through the dining room through the kitchen. The bedrooms and bathroom are off to the side. This was actually one of the selling points to us. We entertain alot and I feel like the house holds more people because of the configuaration.

We have a splanch but the way the house was set up, the floor plan is very open for the first level up to the living room. Once you go up to the bedrooms, then it is your standard "colonial" look. We love it! It is so much easier to entertain & also the open feeling gives it a much bigger appearance. Everyone that has been to our house always comments on how open it is!

We live in a typical British style house, all of the rooms are off of a central hallway. On one hand, I really like it because each room is all nice and cozy. On the other hand, I can't do something in the kitchen while my little boy is in the living room, it doesn't work that way. Our rooms are all quite small, except for our kitchen, which stinks also.

Next house will be a mansion! I have been shopping for new husbands, so the next one will be MEGA wealthy!!!

Same here - about the little rooms, not the husband shopping...although it sometimes seems like a good idea...Chat Icon

We're building an extension which will have elements of open plan, but the kitchen part will be partially closed off. DH had always liked the separate rooms because we cook a lot and there's concern over everything alway smelling like food, and things getting greasy. But, it is much easier for entertaining... We have a railroad style colonial where the LR runs into the DR into the Kitchen. I wish I could open up the LR into the DR more, but the bathroom is to the left of the DR and I would end up losing a wall in the LR, which is small enough already.

I'm happy having individual, separate rooms, I just wish they were bigger.

me too....I don't really like open floor plans because if one room isn't straightened up It would drive me crazy... our house is one of those old houses with lots up seperate rooms and its great for us

Open floor plans are ok by me. What I have now that I hate is that our bedrooms are on the same floor as our living room, DR and kitchen. When I put my kids to bed, I feel like I can't watch TV in the LR, do dishes or other things because they will hear me down the hall way!

Re: do you prefer open floor plans or seperate rooms?

i like the LOOK of an open floor plan

but living out here, i prefer separate rooms because i can close some off and only have to heat a room or two in the winter.

we're actually going to make some changes to close off a room or two to be able to do this

I like open for the kitchen and eating/lounge area for entertainment purposes. And also, so that whoever is in the kitchen isn't isolated from the family.

I like cozy, more-closed rooms for warmth.

So for me, it's a combination.Chat Icon

I love the flow from a kitchen to a den to a DR to a LR. It's conducive to entertaining.

Bedrooms should be closed off.

Re: do you prefer open floor plans or seperate rooms?

our townhouse has separate rooms, which at first i liked when we were buying the place, but now after living in it i wish it had a more open floor plan. whenever we're entertaining people always seem to squish into the same room. we just put it on the market last week and some of the feedback we've gotten so far is that people really like our house, but they don't like the floor plan.

Our first floor is VERY open and spacious...I think it just feels bigger. Plus all of the light coming in is great, too!

I prefer an open floor plan. We are expanding our house in a couple of years and our goal is to make it as open and airy as possible.

Re: do you prefer open floor plans or seperate rooms?

our is a combo

From our living room you can see and talk to those in the kitchen and "nook"

from the kitchen and nook you can see those in the dining room

it is a square with a pantry in the middle-

Upstairs- we have an open office space- no doors- we opted to not put those on until we "need" to-children come along-

but the rest of the bedrooms/bathroom are obv. sep.

ETA: I do like open floor plans though

Re: do you prefer open floor plans or seperate rooms?

We went from separate rooms to an open floor plan last year. I'm on the fence as far as which I prefer. I like the spacious look of the open plan and when we've had parties or dinners, its been great bc everyone can hang out all over the main floor and still be mingling. I love the island and the pendants look too. But I miss the walls sometimes - less space for pictures is one reason. Also, if your kitchen is not cleaned up, your LR is not cleaned up, KWIM? Yesterday we were having birthday celebration here we were taking pictures. Iin the background you can see the pizza box, cake box, pizza dishes, all on the kitchen counter. If we still had walls, it would be hidden in situations like that.

ETA: The open plan is great with small kids, I can watch them while I cook or clean up iif they are in the LR. Before I use to have to constantly poke my head out while cooking.

thats what my main problem with the open floor plan would be...whenever we entertain our kitchen becomes a nightmare (thanks to not having a dishwasher) ....I love that we can hang out in the dining room or living room and not be able to see the mess thats accumulating in the kitchen
