Do you really need an extra car seat?
I know it makes life a bit easier, but is having a second carseat really necessary? If we don't have to spend the extra money I would like to avoid it.

Re: Do you really need an extra car seat?
I do actually think it is worth it. You don't have to buy two expensive seats. But it is a PITA to try to install and uninstall the convertible seats all the time.
We have a Graco Comfortsport seat for our older car, it is light, easy (we've travelled with it) and it cost $79.

Re: Do you really need an extra car seat?
We have an extra base and it's still in the closet, we only use the one that is in the car. We also only have one of the bigger seats so the seat will go with the baby when he gets bigger! We rarely use DH's truck when we go out so it's not a big deal. We definately could have gotten away with only having one base and just switch it when necessary.

Re: Do you really need an extra car seat?
When DD was in the infant car seat we had 2 bases and it was great. Now that she is in the convertible, we have one and my parents have one. Totally worth it IMO. We have a Britax and my parents have a less expensive one that was around $100. I couldn't imagine taking them in and out all the time.

Re: Do you really need an extra car seat?
We needed it when DS was an infant and he was in daycare. We needed to be each other's backup.

We do because DD is in daycare and he drops off while I pick up. Even my mom has a carseat in case of emergencies.

Re: Do you really need an extra car seat?
I have never even wished I had one with my two boys. However, I am a SAHM and on the weekends we use my vehicle rather than DH's car. So if you both work and one does a dropp off and someone else may get to p/u DC before the other it would be a def must.

Totally agree. All 3 of my children only ever had one seat, in my car.

Re: Do you really need an extra car seat?
Right now, we only have one car seat base (DS is still in an infant carrier.) I find it annoying but DS says he doesn't mind switching it into his car. I hate it...it's another step that we don't need. I hate when I leave them and we don't switch it...what if he NEEDED to take him out and the car seat base was in my car. I won't get another base now, but when DS moves into a convertible, I plan on getting a second. I wish I would have registered for another. Even if we only used my car on the weekends (DH likes to drive his car on weekends since he doesn't use it during the week) I still would not want to switch it every time we switched cars. If you can swing it, it's more convenient to get another. Maybe someone can buy it as a Holiday gift.

Re: Do you really need an extra car seat?
We have two carseats in both vehicles. I think it's very important. If there is ever a situation where the "other" parent needs to get DC, you need to have the car seat in that vehicle. Sometimes things happen where the car with the car seat is unavailable, and you'll never know where and when that will happen. Plus, it's generally safer not swapping car seats between cars around too often. The chances of the seat not being installed properly increase a lot if you keep swapping the seats.

Re: Do you really need an extra car seat?
I think it depends on your situation.
DS is in my car 95% of the time - but we do have an extra carseat that my cousins gave us - that we had installed in DH's car. He actually drove him in it yesterday while I was running around.

Re: Do you really need an extra car seat?
We do, but I have to say that I do not think it is necessary. The one we have for out main car is a Britax and it is really easy to install so I could see just having that one. Having two is a convenience IMO, not a must, as long as you are an expert in installing it correctly.

Re: Do you really need an extra car seat?
I have the Britax in my car.
When we go upstate in my dad's truck, I WILL NOT take the Britax out of my car - BFF's aunt installed it, and she's a safety expert - that car seat WON'T BUDGE!
I will buy a less expensive car seat for my dad's truck so that way I don't have to worry about moving the seat from my car anywhere else.

We had an extra base for DH's car when we were using the infant seat but only one forward facing seat now.

When DS was in the infant seat, everyone bought their own base (we bought one for me, one for DH, & my mom & his parents each bought their own). Now that he is only in the Britax, DH has a graco in his car, and his mom & my mom bought the same. The convertable seat is too much of a PITA to swap all the time.
