Do you say "thank you" for a thank you?
This has happened a few times with different people, and I'm not sure what to make of it.
Someone had done us a favor, helped us out with something and didnt charge us. To say thank you, I sent them a gift card to their favorite store. I never heard anything from them about it, no thank you, not even an acknowlegement that they received it. Just wondering what the etiquette is, do you normally say thanks when someone sends a thank you gift? I dont really want to approach them about it, but I'd at least like to know that they received it!

I normally follow up with a phone call. If it is business, I send an email.

I do normally acknowledge it by calling... but I don't think one should expect a thank you for a thank you.
YOU are the one doing the thanking. While it would be nice for them to acknowledge it, I don't think it's necessary (and I wouldn't expect it).

I always try to acknowledge things like that. When people do me a favor or help me out, I like to give them a little token of appreciation, but sometimes they refuse. I always feel a little indebted to them after that, kinda like I still "owe" them something, KWIM?

For a gift thank you like yours, I absolutely would've thanked whoever sent it - probably verbally or through email. Coming from your side, I can see how you'd be wondering if it was received.

Re: Do you say "thank you" for a thank you?
Good question! We had house guests that gave us and our girls each a lottle something as a thank you for letting them stay the weekend with us. I obviously thanked them when they gave it to us, but should I have sent a thank you as well?

I would call or email to acknowledge the gift of thank you, but I don't know that I would then write a ty note since the intent was to thank me in the first place.

If I receive the thank you gift in person, I do not send a note. If I get it in the mail, I try to send a note, just so the person knows I received it.

Re: Do you say "thank you" for a thank you?
DH did some work over at a neighbors house and didn't charge them. They sent us a gift certificate to a resturant and we appreciated it so much- DH doesn't have much free time, so when he helps others out, it's nice to know that they appreciate it and aren't "using him". So I sent a thank you to them even though they were thanking us.

Re: Do you say "thank you" for a thank you?
I follow up with at least a phone call to tell them they didn't have to send us the gift. It just recently happened to us. DH did a favor for a friend and they sent us a $50 gc to a place we like to eat at. I made sure DH called them, mostly b/c all I could think of was how do they know we even got it, but also it wasn't necessary.
