Do you take your toddler to the dr. every time they get sick?
I have to say that I have been really lucky in that my children are rarely sick! Teething kicked my butt, but rarely sick.
Both of the twins are sick now. I have had two really rough nights of no sleep. Their eyes are watering, runny nose, cough...no fever....they are drinking and sort of eating...
So, do I drag them to the dr. for a cold?

my peds usually say if fever lasts 3 days and not breaking then bring them in. If eating and drinking with no diarrhea then let it run its course. They could have allergies. Mine and my dds are going nutty.. Heard Ragweed is going rampid right now.

Re: Do you take your toddler to the dr. every time they get sick?
We have been lucky and right now is really the first time Kaydyn has been really sick (she is 19 months). We brought her in because she had a high fever (102-103) all day that wasn't really going down with Tyenol and because she was sticking her fingers in her ears. We wanted to rule out any kind of infection.
Normally if she just has the sniffles we don't bring her...we figure it's a cold and it will run its course.

Definitely not. If something lingers more than a week or 10 days I will or if she has a fever or trouble breathing because of a cough but that's about it. She's in preschool and seems like she has a cold all year round. 9 times out 10 childhood illnesses are viral and there's nothing to be done.

Same here. Unless there is something really out of the norm like a high fever, diarhea combined with vomiting, or if the illness is extended, I don't bring DS in.
On the occassions I have brought DS in, it was always something viral that just had to run its course anyway.

Same here. After a few really nasty colds, that just ended up being colds and nothing else, I will wait it out for at least a week before bringing him in. If he has a fever, I call and ask if they think I should bring him in.

Re: Do you take your toddler to the dr. every time they get sick?
I definitely do not! My 3 1/2 yr old DS has been to THREE sick visits in his entire life-- two were because I suspected an infection (both times I was wrong, it was viral), and the third time was because I had a 7 wk old newborn and I was worried about her catching whatever he had.
I am such a germophobe, I HATE going for sick visits and sitting in the waiting room with all the coughing sick kids running around, then going into the exam room that had god-knows-what in there five minutes ago, etc. You take the chance of catching something else there, and meanwhile 90% of the time your kid's illness is viral and there's nothing they can do about it anyway! JMO....

No...I have been lucky that Noah has had only maybe a few colds ever....I have only taken him for one sick visit for a bad cough that lasted more then a few days....Usually unless theres a bad cough, sign of ear infection or high fever for over 3 days I dont take him or call....Thats when I would.

Re: Do you take your toddler to the dr. every time they get sick?
I hardly ever take Megan when shes just feeling sick.
Besides well visits, we had one trip to the ER for an allergic reaction, one for coxsackie last summer and another just to discuss her poor eating habits. Other than that, she just has her well visits.
If it lasts a week, then I will bring her in. If the fever is high, I will bring her in. She has never had an ear infection or been put on antibiotics...which I am grateful for. Let me knock on wood now!

Same here--we would have lived at the doctor's office last October-January if I brought him in everytme he had a cold. As long as nothing lingers or he doesn't have an unusually high fever or just seems too out of it even for a sick kid, I don't bring him to the doctor.

Re: Do you take your toddler to the dr. every time they get sick?
Nope. DD has only had like 2 sick visits in 4 years. If there is no fever (or just low grade), she isn't complaining of anything & the symptoms haven't been prolonged, I will usually put a call in to the doctor to see what they suggest, and I'm usually just told ways to keep her comfortable at home & what to watch out for.
