What I mean is this. Do you think that they should make it like a national day of remembrence, like Memorial Day or Labor Day? I ask b/c I've heard some people say that it should and others say that it best be left alone.

I don't think it'll EVER be forgotten, regardless of whether or not it becomes a national holiday.

NO i don't
I think there are a LOT of tragedies that have happened. And i don't think that we need a holiday to remember that it happened.
we will eventually have 365 days of national days of rememberences if every tragedy was nationalized

I say let it alone. Im sad for all the lives lost, and is nice to remember them, but not make it into a Holiday like Columbus Day

How many people just look at Columbus day as a day off?

It would be terrible if 9/11 came down to that.

I personally think that the way they have been remembering the day is fine (moments of silence, reading the names at ground zero etc) . I don't think we need a holiday like memorial day or columbus day that will close schools and businesses just to remember this day. I think the biggest message of this day is that life does go on. We remember and go on with our lives. The terrorists will not stop us or change our way of life. Those who have lost family and friends should be given the day to remember thier loved ones the way they want them to be remembered. I have been deeply affected by 9/11 and will always remember going through this tragedy and having to keep the day as normal as possible for my students so they wouldn't get upset. I like to watch and hear the memorials on tv and radio but want life to go on as usual- memories never forgotten.

I'm watching the reading of the names - I still get so emotional.

I was so scared that day - it was my first week away at college, and I knew my father was working there that day. I'd never felt so helpless/anxious/scared....then ANGRY, because that's exactly how those terrorists wanted us to feel. Chat Icon Chat Icon

I totally agree. Plus we don't have national holidays for other big tragedies like Pearl Harbor where thousands of lives were lost also. No one will ever forget 9/11.

This is how I feel too. We all see so many people who see Memorial Day as a 3-day weekend. Who really honors those who fought for us in all the wars? I personally agree with you guys.

don't think they should make it a "holiday" per say, but most companies, esp. in NYC allows employees to take off that day if they want to and it doesn't count toward their vacation/personal days. Which I think it's a good way to do it.

Re: Do you think 9/11 should be commemorated like Columbus Day?

yeah a floating day for those that want to attend services would be OK

if you make it a national holiday, it becomes just "a day off from work"

Re: Do you think 9/11 should be commemorated like Columbus Day?

I have truely mixed emotions on this subject. The person who my family lost his wife can't move on. She remembers everyday for the rest of her life. They were about to close on a new house in Long Island and wound up cancelling the purchase because she just couldnt purchase the house they were going to purchase together. She wound up buying a different house.

She has to wake up everyday without him. Watch their grandchildren grow up without him. For her life is not moving on, it's a constant reminder how he was taken away.

For her every day is a remembrance day.

For me I like the memorials and the remembrances. I sit in front of the TV and watch, cry with the families and realize how special my own family is and how lucky I am. If I didnt have the day off I would probably take a personal day to sit home watch the memorials and not use it as a "day off" but a day to remember and be with my loved ones.

Absolutely...
We have Veterans Day for all the men and woman who have been in wars or the service.
9/11 was the worst tragedy to take place on our home soil. 4 years ago, I thought 9/12 should have been a national day of mourning.
And every year since then I think the same thing.
JMO...
Edited to say:
You can't really compare 9/11 to Colombus day. Yeah so he landed on what is now the Bahamas. I think that's why people view it as just a day off. I think people will always remember 9/11, and tell their children and their grandchildren why we have the day off.
There is no comparison.

Re: Do you think 9/11 should be commemorated like Columbus Day?

I'm not really sure about this one....
Like Shorty said, I don't want it as a day "off". Then again< i don't think we should forget about what happened. I think there are so many things on tv, we CAN'T forget..and we shouldnt....
Today is a sad day........Chat Icon Although I wasn't that close to it, I was in the city that day for school, I did have to walk home-My friend lost his father-and he's never been the same.....Chat Icon

I agree with what someone else said...it will then become just another day off! I would hate for 9/11 to come to that. It was one of the most (if not the most) tragic day in our history. We need to remember the victims and what happened on that horrific dayChat Icon
