do you think that iui's are painful?
while trying for my dd 6 years ago i tried an iui. it wasn't pleasant. fast forward to today. i have been monitored by the re all cycle and everything seems to be good...my fsh is good, my amh, i had a nice follicle 21.5, i ovulated and now i am just waiting to see if anything happens.(i did a natural cycle). Since I seem to be good dh is next to be tested. he had low something last time he was tested ( 6 years ago...large amount of sperm but few that were normal). we were able to acheive my pregnancy with my daughter but it just took forever doing monitored cycles. this time i have a feeling the dr will def push for trying iui again. could i have had a bad experience that it was so painful? it is because i have a tipped uterus?

I have a tipped/retroverted uterus and my iui's weren't painful. They are like pap smears. I did have discomfort for a few seconds but it was over very quickly. May be the RE who did your iui rushed it causing the pain. If your RE suggests an iui this time, mention that it was very painful last time and hopefully he/she will try to be gentle. GL!

Re: do you think that iui's are painful?
My first IUI was very painful- I think my follicle was huge and the fluid bring pushed in made me cramp bad. The next two IUI's are completely painless. I think it could have been just a bad experience.

I had one that was painful and one that was nothing. I truly think it depends in the dr. I had 2 different drs.

ITA. a couple of my first ones were easy breezy I even asked "wow thats it?". the last one was so annoying. the NP who did it really had no idea what she was doing and after torturing me for 15 mins I told her get the Dr which she did who then completed it in less than 30 sec. as PP's said - just mention to ur RE and make sure to speak up if its painful. Wish I told her in the first couple mins to get the Dr.

Mine weren't too bad and I had 6. After 1 I just got used to them. Every IUI was different but not too bad. GL

Re: do you think that iui's are painful?
I had three. I thought they were all uncomfortable like a Pap smear but over quick and not terrible.

Re: do you think that iui's are painful?
It wasnt a doctor who did mine maybe it was a NP. I just remember her trying over and over to actually do the IUI. she had to change the tube (tube needle cath what is it called i dont know) and i think she said she needed the narrowest one. it was so long ago and i dont remember anything except how much it hurt! he is going for the SA on saturday so i am preparing myself for going this route. thanks for your responses!

This explains why your IUI was painful. The skill level of a NP is not always same as a RE. Sometimes we don't have a choice but to choose a practice where nurses do procedures because of commute, insurance etc...I hate nurses doing procedures and hate it when they bill the same amount for a procedure done by a NP as they do for a RE. I feel patients should at least get a discount for having the procedure done by a nurse. If your current clinic has nurses do IUIs, it won't hurt to request that a RE do it. I am sure they will accommodate your request if possible.
