Do you think the economy is gettng better?
I was listening to 880 this morning...and all of a sudden there seems to be some better news about the economy.
In addition, they were reporting that a lot of Americans believe the economy has hit rock bottom and is getting better.
What do you think??

I don't think so but I DO want other people to think so! That would be the first step in recovery.

I'm usually overly optomistic but unfortunately I have a bad feeling we haven't seen the worst of it yet.

I think all of the bad stuff is totally over, and everything will do a complete 180, and the Dow Jones will be back over 10,000 in a month.
Then, I'm going to take all the profits that I just made and buy some land for a unicorn ranch....
I think it's not going to get significantly better until 2010....

Re: Do you think the economy is gettng better?
I keep hearing the economy is bad, nobody is going out, etc, etc. However, DH and I went on a date Saturday night...and the wait to sit down at the restaurant was over an hour! Everytime I go to the mall/store/etc...the parking lot is packed. Restaurants are always busy...so while I hear about the economy being bad, I'm not really seeing it...KWIM?

Long Island is a microcosm unto itself. For better or for worse, we often don't line up with what is going on with the rest of the country....

I think that is bc people don't know how to REALLY cut back. (including myself)
They aren't saying "OMG we have no savings, let's not go out or go shopping"
They are saying "I am going to be SO frugal and not order an appetizer or only buy what is on sale"
No one even knows how to really save, no one knows how to say this is a necessity, this is an extra. . . everything is a necessity LOL "My mani/pedi is the ONLY time I have to relax all week" "I can't wear that shirt to ANOTHER event - I DESERVE a new one" etc.

Re: Do you think the economy is gettng better?
i honestly don't know.. but i do think that in this financial situation, if people hear that things are getting better, it tends to spur them into spending more, not hoarding money etc.. which in turn does help things turn around. So, i'm glad the media is reporting that things are looking up.. because it becomes one of those self fulfilling prophecies

Re: Do you think the economy is gettng better?
I would like to think it was.
All the reports I watch seem to say end of 2009, 2010 for start of recovery.
I'm scared we haven't seen the worst of it. I think there are still more jobs to be lost.

you win Tilde.
also, the entire NorthEast was not as badly hit as the midwest and the south.
it's going to take a LONG time to recover from this.

Re: Do you think the economy is gettng better?
it's going to suck for a while.
I know why you asked that ? though...the dow had some gains, the gov't is taking a stand against big banks and big bonuses..it's encouraging.
It's far from over though. Personally, things will start to come back in about a year or so.
It will trickle back, won't be a wave.

but in people stop spending money completely- the economy will never recover...
I could sit in my house all weekend and save gas and money- but who is that going to benefit right now?- I will be miserable and that money wont be getting pumped back into the economy

Re: Do you think the economy is gettng better?
Good question. During the summer it was impossible to find a parking spot in my LIRR lot. Then as we got closer to Christmas and after the holidays it's not so bad. Just recently have I noticed that it's starting to get a bit more full. I'm really hoping it's people being able to find jobs.

Tell me about it! Some stores are so crowded on the weekends, you'd never think we had these problems.

Very true. This is actually the time to spend because everything is much cheaper. But I'm thinking people aren't spending also because they are afraid of losing a job and then they're going to be in big trouble.

I agree with you - I WANT everyone to keep spending. BUT many people claim to be cutting back, claim to be living on the bare minimum etc. when really there is always more you can sacrifice if you really need to. (again, I am including myself in this)

See and I'm seeing the opposite... My train is getting emptier and emptier from people losing there jobs. It's so sad bc I'm used to seeing and exchaging exausted beginning-of-day/end-of-day smiles with the same people and those people are starting to drop like flies.
