Do you think you are more or less likely to get laid off if you are pregnant?

I can't help but feel slightly nervous with all the bad financial news going around.

I haven't told my boss yet that I'm pregnant. I work with all men in a male dominated industry.

Would you recommend telling them now or wait as long as I can at the risk of putting a big bull's eye on my back to be the first to be laid off?

In normal times I would say less. However if you are part of a big group of people being laid off then the pregnancy issue would kind of not be an issue

Thats a tough one! I think woman when pregnant are the first to be looked at when downsizing is an option.. just b/c they feel there is a slight chance she may not want to come back or come back full time... therefore easier to let go. I think it will also be determined by how much $$ you make.. are you costing them more than someone else who does the same amt of work...

I would say see if you can wait it out a bit longer and see what happens if you can before telling.

I think you should tell your boss soon...

In this kind of situation, although you are pregnant, if they lay off a large number of people, i wouldnt say it is discrimination

I agree about waiting as long as possible. You dont want to be in the spotlight during these difficult times. Hold off as long as possible and tell only when it's more obvious.

They can't lay you off because you are pregnant, but if there are layoffs you can certainly be laid off when you are PG.

Normally I would think it is less likely to be laid off while PG because they may be concerned about discrimination, but since there may be a large # of layoffs it may not make a difference. It's a tough call. Chat Icon

Only if they lay you off 'because' you are pregnant. If they have other reasons, they can lay you off.

Nope, I was laid off during both of my pregnancies. Each company had a wave of lay offs at the time so I wasn't the only one.

To the original poster, if you do get laid off (God forbid) it's a good opportunity to negotiate your severance. I found both companies very willing to work with me bc they feared I might sue. The first thing I said was I needed to have my attorney (aka DH) review the package so I can know what my options were. With the first company I was 5 months pg, I countered the package with the request that they pay for my health insurance at no cost to me through pregnancy and until the baby was 3 months old. They agreed and even let me stay on until the baby was 10months old bc it took a while for me to find a job. The second time, I was 7 months pg and they let me stay on the insurance until the baby was 4 months. I just paid the same premium that I did when I was an employee.
