for example if you dc calls the bottle BABA. do you let it go or do you really try to get them to say bottle.
There are only a few words that dd doesnt actually say the right word for, just wondering what you do.

dd is almost 18 months old.

BABA-Bottle
NAY- Renee( sitters name)
Mo-Mo- ELMO

It depends on their age. Like for Andy (20 months), I won't really correct him, but I will use the proper word and not his version of it.

For Sarah (3 years) I will correct her but some letter sounds are still a little hard for her to say correctly so I try not to make a big deal out of it.

Jeremy is only 17 months, DH and I use baba and other "abbreviations". When Jeremy is a little older and starts to really talk, we will use the correct words. It is just something we do Chat Icon
For "grownup" things, we only use the correct words and talk to DS A LOT!!!

I don't - I try to get her to say them the same way again because it is so damn cute! She pronounces most of her words really well - so I love the ones she butchers an extra lot. She's 15 monthsChat Icon

ive just heard that, when it comes to this, youre "supposed" to say the same word back to them- like, if they say "mama, baba", you are supposed to say "you want a bottle? okay"

so when hannah says those words, like "el-wo" for elmo, i just say "yes, that IS elmo"....

things like peoples names, i think they are cute and should stick, you know? like nay for renee, thats cute- id start calling her nay nay or something....

I let it go, but *I* don't start using the word myself to reinforce it. Eventually, they learn the correct way.

We always said "Grandpa," but Katherine said it as "PopPop" which I think is cuter, so that I didn't "correct." She also used to say "Babbap" for "rabbit." Through time, she's learned the correct pronunciation; now she only uses "Babbap" to refer to her special blue rabbit, like it's his name.

I correct her.
She was saying baba, but we never use that word ourselves, even relatives who call it baba we correct them. She now says bottle very clearly.

Basically, if she says her version of the word, we don't make a big deal out of it, we just use the proper word when we repeat it to her.

My DD calls elmo, mo mo tooChat Icon
