Do you watch sports and the news in front of your kids?
I try not to pay attention to all those studies about young children and tv. I know we are doing our best to stimulate DS and encourage learning.
If I can, I don't have the tv on in front of DS. He gets a little Sesame St and Dora type shows but I limit it. DH always watches sports in front of DS. If it's not football, it's tennis. If it isn't sports, DH will be watching the news.
Do you and your DH watch sports/news in front of your young children?

Re: Do you watch sports and the news in front of your kids?
DH doesn't watch sports, so no
*sometimes* we have the news on when getting dinner ready/cleaning up
Otherwise we watch TV after she goes to bed...luckily she's not really interested in it either....just sometimes elmo videos on you tube which is all my fault!

Re: Do you watch sports and the news in front of your kids?
News, definitely not. Not age appropriate for them. Too much violence.
Sports, yes. I'm not a big sports fan, but we'll definitely watch sports once in a while. It's good for them to see sportsmanship, teamwork, etc.

Ditto Girl!!
DH is a TV nut. He's out all day working doing construction so when he's home he's an electronic nut and wants the TV on since he gets none at work (radio doesn't count). He's always looking up new plasma TV's, etc. If it was up to him there'd be one in every room. There's usually a TV on always in the house. Usually in the kitchen though so I hear the news or DH watches sports and we play in the playroom. We do limit his TV and since he's at daycare all day during the week I know he doesn't watch TV. A little on the weekends and night to keep him calm is fine. ETA - only news I watch when he's up is usually the Sun morning news on CBS and it's really only stories. Mason is in the other room playing and not even paying attention. It's my coffee time and I like the stories they do

Re: Do you watch sports and the news in front of your kids?
No. I really like to watch TV but only will when he is asleep. Once in awhile he will watch a cartoon to give me some time to get things done.
My DS will stop everything and STARE at the TV though, it freaks me out. That is why no TV yet. He is only 8 months.

All the time. Sports are always on in our house. We are careful to make sure that the explicit shows and voilence isn't on when DD's are around.

Re: Do you watch sports and the news in front of your kids?
Sports yes. News only a little of the Today Show when I'm getting ready for work in the morning.
DH inhales everything sports related so it would be hard for my kids not to be exposed.

Re: Do you watch sports and the news in front of your kids?
Yes. If Dora or The Fresh Beat Band aren't on then CNN or Football usually is.
I don't limit the TV in my house. My DD is 3 and very intelligent. She knows the ABC's, numbers, colors, words in Spanish and Chinese (thanks Dora and Kai-lan!) She also can yell Touch Down! at the appropriate time.

Re: Do you watch sports and the news in front of your kids?
All the time here too. As I type this the news is on. She really ignores the news and sports (which DH watches constantly). The only time she pays attention to the tv is if a cartoon it on. We let her watch Yo Gabba Gabba at 4:30 as a wind down before bed (she goes to sleep at 6). She is 9 months.

Re: Do you watch sports and the news in front of your kids?
If a football game is on my DD will just stare at the screen like she is mezmorized! I can't shelter her from a TV on in the house. And we aren't going to give up our lives so she won't ever get exposed to a TV set. I don't sit her in front of it for hours, but if it's on and she's in the room so be it.

We always wathc sports with ds, everything from MMA to football. I watch the news in the morning when dh is getting ready for work. Ds is in his own little world. The only time he notices the news is when dh comes in and drools over darlene rodriguez.

Not the news. Too boring for her
Sports, absolutely. She says "ouch" and "go, go, go" during football. Counts 1, 2, 3 GO! for the snap (off time of course)

Re: Do you watch sports and the news in front of your kids?
Yep. DD is just over 2. Honestly, rarely does she even pay attention if we're watching "grown up" tv. Now if her shows or movies are on she's all ears!
Edit - She will watch a little football because my DH is a HUGE Jets fan but other than that she doesn't pay attention to what we watch.

Re: Do you watch sports and the news in front of your kids?
sometimes, DS is obsessed with Diane Sawyer since he was 3m World News Tonight, and sometimes local, but I only let it go 30 min. I get news more efficiently online.

Re: Do you watch sports and the news in front of your kids?
We don't really watch the news in front of DS, but games are definitely on a lot. DS loves to watch and play sports. DS will stop and watch a game for a minute or two, yell "touchdown" or "home run" depending on the sport and then goes back to playing with his toys.
