Do you wear horizontal stripes?

If so, do you think you should be a lower size to "get away with it"?

I'm tall and have wideish shoulders/hips. I'm going into a size 12 now and keep seeing adorable skirts like this on H&M:




Obviously, I'd need to try it on but I always have this negative feeling about horizontal stripes/patterns that makes me feel like I shouldn't even think about it.

Am I crazy, does anyone else think this way?

I wear them and I'm not skinny! I actually heard they can be very slimming if they're the "right" stripes. That skirt is really pretty!

I wear stripes all the time.

I wear stripes but i also think it depends on the item. Sometimes it can look great and sometimes it doesnt.

I see girls tall short thin or heavy and it can look great or it can go horribly wrong and make them look wide.

I love that skirt and I am thin,but I do think stripes just makes me look wider

If you're comfortable in it then wear it - horizontal stripes make EVERYONE look wider. It's a fact, not an opinion.

I don't think you have to be skinny to pull off any and all stripes - and I think if you put something on and love the way it looks on you.....then, great.

But no, horizontal stripes are not for everyone.
I can't thnk of much other than black that actually looks good on everyone

With horizontal stripes you really have to try it on.
I wear a lot of things wtih horizontal stripes, but some things look awful.
It's really hit or miss- depends on the cut of the garment and where the stripes are hitting.
Generally if they are hitting a wider part of you- it's no bueno.

I've actually never tried stripes on my bottom half - that might be a nightmare. I do have a few striped tops though.

Actually, that stitch fix dress had stripes and although some of you liked it, I think it was only b/c I posted the really "GOOD" photo of it. There were some others of my bottom half in that dress which were just NOT fit for viewing.

I wear horizontal stripes but NEVER on bottom. My hips and butt are big enough. They don't need any help.

You all bring up some great points. I will wear them in tops but I am smaller on top than I am on bottom so I feel like I can kind of get away with it.

I think horizontal stripes that are well placed can look good on any size. As for that skirt, IMO it would only look good on a smaller size girl, but a horizontal stripe shirt can look great on any size. I just purchased a blue and gold horizontal stripe sweater. I will pair it with dark jeans or trousers so it balances me out. HTH
