Doctors urge against nonessential ultrasound
Doctors urge against nonessential ultrasound THE ASSOCIATED PRESS
August 8, 2006
Keepsake sonograms have become popular with many young parents - from Tom Cruise to the couple next door.
It's a practice many physicians discourage.
The latest concern comes from a study that suggests, in mice at least, that ultrasound can affect the fetal brain. Even so, researchers say that should not keep women from having ultrasound scans for medical reasons.
When pregnant mice were exposed to ultrasound, a small number of nerve cells in the developing brains of their fetuses failed to extend correctly.
"Our study in mice does not mean that use of ultrasound on human fetuses for appropriate diagnostic and medical purposes should be abandoned," said Dr. Pasko Rakic, lead researcher and chairman of the neurobiology department at Yale University School of Medicine.
However, he added, women should avoid unnecessary ultrasound scans.
Dr. Joshua Copel, president-elect of the American Institute of Ultrasound Medicine, said his organization tries to discourage "entertainment" ultrasound, but considers sonograms important when there is a medical benefit.
"It may be very important to know the exact dating of pregnancy," Copel said. "It's certainly helpful to know the anatomy of the fetus, but we shouldn't be holding a transducer on mom's abdomen for hours and hours and hours."

i've actually read about this before which is why I wouldn't get a 3D or even rent a doppler.

Re: Doctors urge against nonessential ultrasound
My ob told me not to get a 3D ultrasound unless absolutely necessary.

Re: Doctors urge against nonessential ultrasound
My doc's office has a policy of one ultrasound at about 18-22 weeks and that is it unless medically necessary.

same here, just not worth the chance and I will see the baby soon enough. the regular ones are fine with me that I get very far and few from the doctor. My doctor doesnt like to do them much either. I agree with him.

I have to get one every few weeks to moniter her growth. I hate reading stuff like this they said that was ok if medically needed, its more for the moms to be that go and get unnecessary ones just to have a pic for keepsakes or want to see the baby often. It was on channel 2 news today too. Dont worry at all

me too! The other thing is not to stress too much about it as the studies were done on mice.

Re: Doctors urge against nonessential ultrasound
I go every 3 weeks and they do a quick sono...it worries me but the dr's check his growth and my placenta since I have placenta previa. After reading this article the other day, we decided against a 3D sono..its really not necessary

Re: Doctors urge against nonessential ultrasound
My Dr. gives me an ultrasound every ime I go, and I'm not high risk or anything. She happens to have one in her office and gives me pictures every time.

She wouldnt listen to me about possible harm.

Your insurance covers this? Just curious.
I had sonos pretty frequently for one reason or another, but I never had a 3D - my OB also advised "against it". I just thought it was b/c her office didn't have one.
