Re: Does anyone else hate fire pits?

It's driving me nuts. I don't even think it's a real fire pit-- just a metal bucket or something. This has been going on all week. The 16 year old kid and his 5-6 year old brother are doing this fire pit. I don't see an adult supervising. In addition to that, they are making this annoying pumping / clicking sound. I'm not sure what the hell they are doing. This has been going on from 8-12 PM all week.

Re: Does anyone else hate fire pits?

YES! OMG I thought I was the only one. The smell of that burning wood gives me SUCH a headache!
And after sitting around one, your hair and clothes just reek so bad!

And my neighbors have one and it wafts into our house through the AC vents and makes me so angry.

I got a propane fire table because I love the fire, etc, but there was no way I was burning stinky wood and breathing that in.

The propane ones are so much prettier too- we got colored fire glass- looks gorgeous and so mesmerizing,

We also got rid of our fireplace because we'd burn a fire and the house would stink for days. I thought it would all go up the chimney, but apparently not.

Awful

Re: Does anyone else hate fire pits?

I love fire pits, and so do both DC. I built a big one in the backyard. Someone called the fire dept. on me, and the firemen complimented me on how nice the firepit was, but just told me to make sure I age the wood longer so it's not as smokey, and to have a grate over it, to keep down the embers. Otherwise, they were fine with it.

Some towns have ordinances where you can't have any open firepits of any kind, even with covers on them (BBQ grills are fine).

Re: Does anyone else hate fire pits?

I hate them more than I can even explain. My neighbors have one. We live on postage stamp size lots. It stinks. On a nice night, I cant leave my windows open for fresh air, there is not fresh air!!! I don't get it....
The other night, I get a text from him that I should close my upstairs windows, he can see that they are open and the wood he is burning is stinky.... Thanks a lot...

Re: Does anyone else hate fire pits?

We have a metal one that should probably be tossed because it's so old...DH refuses though.

I have to be drunk to sit by it though. Chat Icon

Or I will mosey over for a bit if I'm at a party to be polite.

I hate the smell too.

Re: Does anyone else hate fire pits?

My husband loves ours...it's built in and he has chairs around it...I hate it. He and his friends sit out near it occasionally, but I hate smelling like a smoked sausage. I always have to shower after I use ours.

Does anyone else hate fire pits?

We have one and I have always liked it BUT we are not right on top of our neighbors and have no neighbors behind us. A friend of my DS got seriously injured from one (3rd degree burns over 40% of her body) and 2 months in the hospital for recovery and that alone has made me not want to light ours ever again. It's purely decorative at this point, lol.

We love them, DH and I have fires as much as possible. We even have a grate to put over the fire too so that we can cook on it. We love cooking everything over the fire. Chat Icon

I love ours. DD loves to roast marshmellows and make smores. We don't use it often, maybe once every couple of weeks.

Love them...when there's enough property to accommodate them. Considering your situation, I can understand your dislike for them.

My DH built a big boulder fire pit and my kids love having fires. We have a whole basket dedicated to s'mores "ingredients." Chat Icon And we do rainbow fires after s'mores. Chat Icon

I also love when I can smell my neighbors' fire-pits, brick-ovens or fireplaces.

Re: Does anyone else hate fire pits?

Ugh, last summer we had to stay with relatives until we closed on our house, and their neighbor had a pit, right outside our bedroom window. Stunk everything up and sent me in coughing fits. As of living with relatives wasn't tough enough!

I like them but I titally get not liking it if your neighbor is close enough that it's wafting in your windows and is a frequent occurrence.

Re: Does anyone else hate fire pits?

Dont get me wrong. I like having fires, roasting marshmallows with DD, smores, a glass of wine by the fire. The ambiance of it. But it has to be a propane fire. Cleaner, safer, easier, prettier than the look of burnt out wood, (think a firetable at an upscale hotel or outdoor lounge) and no horrendous smell. As a migraine sufferer I cannot have that smell.
And it sucks when it invades my home from the neighbors house...even with closed windows and tbe AC on.

Exactly this!! I hate having to take a shower after being near one for 5 minutes. It can't be good for your lung health. But put a few drinks in me and I will sit there all night. Chat Icon

Re: Does anyone else hate fire pits?

If there is a large enough space and it vents properly and isn't overly smokey I enjoy it from time to time during the summer months.

Re: Does anyone else hate fire pits?

I hate smelling like fire and no matter where you sit it will no doubt blow right in your face.

We built a fireplace outside to avoid this... It looks like what was left after the house burned down lol... It's a free standing fireplace with a chimny that's roof level so no smoke in the windows wtc. so much more enjoyable and you get all the heat.

Re: Does anyone else hate fire pits?

Our neighbor has one and I can't have my windows open on a nice day. I don't get how they are allowed when it hinders neighbors enjoyment of their own home they pay taxes on! There were a few times I had left a window cracked and woke from a sound sleep thinking my house was on fire from the smell and freaking about how to get my 2 infants out safely bc DH was working.

There are pre-made packs, or you can make your own, if you know how to get the materials. The packs contain different powders, usually metals, that burn at different colors, so you'll have blue, green, pink flames.
