Love them...when there's enough property to accommodate them. Considering your situation, I can understand your dislike for them.
My DH built a big boulder fire pit and my kids love having fires. We have a whole basket dedicated to s'mores "ingredients."  And we do rainbow fires after s'mores. 
I also love when I can smell my neighbors' fire-pits, brick-ovens or fireplaces.
eta - what is a rainbow fire?
There are pre-made packs, or you can make your own, if you know how to get the materials. The packs contain different powders, usually metals, that burn at different colors, so you'll have blue, green, pink flames.
What he said. Just make sure you're done making your s'mores.
