Does anyone else hate their house?
I know that I should be thankful that we can even afford a house but I really don't like it. DH talked me into buying his mom's house (she moved down to SC). I let him know my feelings before we bought it but he made me feel guilty so I gave in. It is not a style house that I like, it's on a semi busy street and it needs SO MUCH WORK. Not to mention that when his mom left, she left all of the stuff she didn't want for us to hget rid of (she was a huge pack rat) and also left a lot of stuff that she claims she will be back to get. I really just want to sell it and move somewhere else but DH gets mad everytime I bring up the subject. That's why I'm venting to you ladies. Anyone else in a similar situation?

Re: Does anyone else hate their house?
I completely understand how you feel. Our house is often a source of stress for me. I am also very thankful that we own a house. However, it is tiny and needs a lot of work as well. I can't say I hate it, I just wish I was able to afford all of the renovations that it truly needs. Some of my friends bought houses about 8 years ago, when the market was MUCH better, at least from a buyer's standpoint. You could get so much more for your money on LI. My friends own beautiful houses and a lot more land.
What has helped me is to just keep telling myself that the house does have a lot of potential, and I will make the necessary changes it needs in due time. Our housing search was a nightmare, so I truly am happy to just own a house and not have to rent. Also, making minor repairs/changes such as new hardware, a new coat of paint, refinishing floors or cleaning carpets, new light fixtures, etc. can make a huge difference in a house and can be relatively inexpensive.

Re: Does anyone else hate their house?
I don't "hate" my house. Just wish is was bigger. A lot bigger.
I can see how your situation would drive me crazy too. I hate clutter of my own stuff let alone someone elses.

Re: Does anyone else hate their house?
I would tell her to come get her stuff or that you will put it in storage for her until she comes to get it. That would cause me huge amounts of stress. I'm a neat freak and very anti-clutter. If you get rid of her stuff, maybe you can slowly start to renovate or redecorate one room at a time and make the house your own.

Re: Does anyone else hate their house?
We bought our house 7 years ago, we were not even engaged. It was a start for us, and a very good investment at the time. No complaints.
Now that we have 2 kids, we've grown into it and I'm not 100% thrilled with the layout... It's a hi-ranch and the bedrooms are on the same level as the LR, DR and kitchen... Just not ideal in out situation...
I look at what we bought and how far we've come and I love it in that sense, just not the practical sense, if that makes sense.

on a positive note I love that we have a very Large basement I love that we have 4 bedrooms I love the location I love that we have a nice size backyard

Re: Does anyone else hate their house?
I'm not thrilled with my house. It's a 4 bedroom / 2 bath ... but it's small. Potential ... YES ... Money ... NO. Need I say more???
I tell everyone this is my "starter house" ... unfortunately, we've been here six years already. This may very well be it for life.

Re: Does anyone else hate their house?
I was just saying this to my SIL last week. I should be grateful that we are able to afford a house on LI, but I made some huge mistakes as a 1st time buyer. I fell in love with our house as soon as I saw a picture of it on line and I had to have it. I knew it was small and that we would have to dormer out eventually, but I never really thought about the cost that comes along with that. needless to say, we've only been in the house for a year, but I don't see a dormer coming anytime soon!!! And I don't see a finished basement, 2nd bathroom, new driveway, new windows, new deck, etc, coming anytime soon. The list can go on and on!!!!

Re: Does anyone else hate their house?
I love my house (of course it could always be bigger) but I hate my yard. It is 90% side yard with no privacy and it isnt even a corner house.

Re: Does anyone else hate their house?
I like our condo... I used to LOVE it, but now with DD coming.....
There just isn't enough room for all of her things - we have a 2 bedroom, and I'm just freaking as to where all this stuff is going to go. The other thing that I'm freaking about is that we are on the 2nd floor, and my mind keeps thinking about dragging that stroller and infant seat up and downstairs by myself.
I don't know how people in apartment buildings do it w/o elevators....

Re: Does anyone else hate their house?
We are going into contract on a house that at 1st and 2nd view I was in love with but now am currently stressing that we rushed into things.
For one, there no garage (2 car or otherwise) which I'm not looking forward to this winter. One of my hopes was to never clean or dig out my car again
ALso the master bedroom is smaller than we wanted plus there is only 1 bath. If we want to resell in a few years we will need to add a bath somewhere to help boost our value
Deep down I like the house but am feeling like its not "THE ONE"
I cannot confide in DH about this because he will get angry that I didnt voice these concerns earlier (but I did not have them before yesterday) Maybe its just nerves about buying our first house

I lived in apartments since college. All different kinds and paying an outrageous amount of money on rent. That was almost 15 years ago. I just bought my house 2 years ago, so I understand what it is like to live in a tiny apartment and use your whole paycheck toward the rent. I'm turning 35.
Now I use almost my entire paycheck toward the mortgage. Yes, it is a positive investment to own a house. And I feel very grateful. However, now I have a child and we have different needs as a family. So I think when people say that they dislike their house, it's because their needs have changed and they cannot make the appropriate changes that they would like toward their current house. I don't think people should be chastised for this. It is difficult to own a house on Long Island, even if you make a good living.

I like our house but I don't like that we can't afford to change all the things I want to change and the list is long. We're doing small projects now. I feel like I'll be 60 before we can do the really big things like gut the kitchen.

Re: Does anyone else hate their house?
we're sort of in a similar situation. we just bought ILs house from them this summer. so i TOTALLY understand the part about them leaving stuff there for you to get rid of! ours did the same thing... although DH talked to them about it before hand, so it wasn't as much as it could have been ( they are TOTAL packrats, too!) its also weird when they come to visit us, because for over 20 years it was " their" house, so its an adjustment for them to, that things aren't where they used to keep them, etc. last time they were here, FIL was going to bed, and instead of walking to the guest room, he started walking to our bedroom ( which was their old bedroom) LOL so little things like that, and some comments about thigns we've changed. but, i do really like the house and the neighborhood, so i think as we keep changing things and keep making it ours it'll just get even better. its just a matter of getting the money to do it all

Re: Does anyone else hate their house?
We were in the same situation as you-we bought DH's mother's house. After a few years, I was so sick of her still referring to it as her house. I knew that no matter what, it would never be MY house no matter what changes we made. Luckily, Dh was supportive when I had had enough. After a few years, the house was back on the market. And now I absolutely LOVE the house I'm in. I know that without the investment of my MILs house we would have never been in the financial situation to buy the one we're in now.

I say this all the time ! DH always says "soon" when I mention that something needs to be done on the house....but soon is going to be 20 yrs from now at this rate !! We bought a fixer upper (which I really didn't want to do) but it's what we could afford so I try to think of the positives.

Re: Does anyone else hate their house?
i'm so sorry you feel this way..i go through periods in which i wish we didn't get this house because the old owners robbed us of the price and there is still sooo much work to do but we need to just focus on the fact that we do have a house!!!!! and eventually you'll make it your own!!!

Re: Does anyone else hate their house?
my house is OK, has potential and it's in a good school district, but I settled on the area. I wanted water view and beach and mooring rights, but I was 8 months pregnant and settled.
DH and I decided that it would only be 5 years - so we have 2.5 to go. I am hoping by then we will squeek out a profit. DH says to sell it now, but with commission and our upgrades - we might lose money - and I just can't do that -- so I will stick it out 2 more years.

BTDT speaking -- please, please, please talk to your DH about this before you go to contract. Try to really imagine all the things that you're concerned about now and think about what you can live with and what you can't.
