Does anyone else have a REALLY BIG toddler? Any concerns?
MY dd was 10 lbs at brth and has alwasy been 90-95 % for bioth height and weight. She is 2 1/2 and wears a 4t I assume by summer she willbe in 5T. She is big all around and although everyonein my family says she is not overweight I am concerned. My dh is heavy and his family temds to be heavy so I can see wheer she could have teh genes. To be honest she eats fairly healthy.Never has fast food, she does eat pizza though, all pasta is whole wheat, sh loves fruit she loves grilled chicken strips ( which i pass off asa chicken nuggets LOL).She eats bacon and eggs on teh weekends but its turkey bacon. I dont know what to do. Maybe its baby fat I dont know. She was 34.2lbs back in October i would say she is close to 37lbs now and about 37 1/2-38 inches so tall as well.Anyone else? Any concerns?

Re: Does anyone else have a REALLY BIG toddler? Any concerns?
Ryan just turned 3. He weighed in a few months ago at 37 lbs and is 38 inches. I know since then he has grown a little taller and maybe put on another pound. He is in the 90th percentile.
I am not concerned, although my neurotic pediatrican is. He asked what Ryan eats, and we told him that he is extremely picky and eats a variety of things, but no veggies.
Ryan does not look overweight AT ALL. He is a solid kid, but looks fine. He is in 3T pants, but now in 4T shirts. (The kid has no waist, so any bigger and his pants just fall off).
He is an active child, never eats fast food, but has always been bigger (born at 9lbs 4oz) weight wise. He takes after DH who is 6'4.

Re: Does anyone else have a REALLY BIG toddler? Any concerns?
yes because there are weight problems on both sides of the family.
My son is solid.
He's a good eater. But then can also be picky sometimes too.
I'm just doing all I can and hope that the outcome is better than mine and DH. Ours is due to years of bad "programming". I'm trying to teach my sona different way of life.
Ped. knows of my concerns. His response to me is that my son has grown at an even pace. No sharp spurts. And he knows that I'm doing my part to ensure that his diet is healthy. No juice. Only water. 2% milk instead of whole because of studies showing that the benefit of the extra fat does not outweigh the risk of obesity that he is predisposed with.
I allow him certain treats like goldfish, cheerios, crackers. But in moderation. If we go out to dinner I'll let him have french fries because we don't take him out that often.
Both grandparents have a lot to say about what I feed him (in that they think I'm depriving him). I just don't understand. If he prefers diced cucumbers than why is that such bad thing. And why does he need juice is he prefers water. I tried to give him watered down apple cider around halloween and he handed it back to me.
My mom was just barking at me last week about how he doesn't eat ice cream. I explained to her, it's not that he doesn't eat ice cream. I just don't keep ice cream in the house. Because of my own weight issues. But if we were out and got ice cream I would let him have some. I don't want to blame my mom for my weight issues but I really felt like saying to her that when kids eat ice cream everyday they look like me (not true for everyone --i Know) But I'm an adult now. I take responsibility for my own actions but do believe that cycles are much harder to break when taught VERY early.

Re: Does anyone else have a REALLY BIG toddler? Any concerns?
my son is on the small side for his age.
but my nephew is 26 months and is literally off the charts for height and weight. i believe they were told that he is bigger than most 3 year olds. when they went to disney recently they had to bring his birth certificate to prove that he wasn't older than he was.
their doc has told them that as long as he is proportional, there is nothing to worry about.
if your doc isn't worried, i wouldn't be either. all children grow at different rates

Re: Does anyone else have a REALLY BIG toddler? Any concerns?
I've got a big boy too, but I'm not worried about it at all. He's not fat, just solid. And he eats pretty well and is decently tall. Plus DH and I are on the thinner side. That's just his body. It's been like that forever, it's not like he just blew up one day. Until the Dr. tells me I have something to be concerned over, I don't even give it a second thought.

He is a cutie! You don't have to shrink them-just go to your profile and select a pic from your photos-LIF does the rest

Re: Does anyone else have a REALLY BIG toddler? Any concerns?
Ava is 2.8 years old and is 40 inches tall and 39lbs. She's in a size 5, not a 5T, a 5. She has no fat on her. She's just a tall girl. I was like that, too until middle school when I stopped growing and everyone else shot up past me, so I'm not worried at all.

Re: Does anyone else have a REALLY BIG toddler? Any concerns?
well, according to growth charts, she's in the 65% for height, and the 92% for weight... so she's a smidge heavier than the average girl her height, but nothing dramatic. If she was in the 30% for height or less, then I bet your ped might say something... but I bet she is within a normal weight range

Re: Does anyone else have a REALLY BIG toddler? Any concerns?
I don't think that weight is generally a cause for concern with a toddler. They only start to focus on it at around 4. Her body is still so babyish and they are all so different. As you stated, she has a good diet, I don't think you should worry. Some toddlers have bellies and it means nothing, when they start to get the bigger kid body, the legs get a lot longer and weight shifts, the body changes. Some kids are just solid. Doesn't mean they are headed down the path to obesity. Yes, there could be a tendency for a weight issue that runs in the family but IMO she's too small to worry about it now. As long as she's not on a steady diet of junk, which it doesn't sound like she is, I think your DD is fine. At the 4 yr visit they will sometimes do a height:weight ratio and let you know if there is an issue. My GF's ped told her that her DD was in the range where they warn the parent's to keep an eye on their diet - and if you saw this little girl, you'd never consider her to be a heavy preschooler. But they look at the percentiles and give a heads up, just in case their diet is lacking or whatever...to avoid obesity in the future. But your DD is too small for this. Of course Im not a Dr. so talk to your Dr about your concerns but comparing to other kids her age still wont give you the best picture. Of 100 kids, someone is going the be the biggest, someone is going to be the smallest. Doesn't mean the biggest is overweight or "too big", KWIM? Doesn't mean the smallest is underweight. Try not to worry... she's really very small.
