Does anyone have a low ceiling finished basement?
if so, what do you use it as? play room? theater room?
DH is 6'1" and is a little concerned about a house we are considering (basement ceiling's are about 5'11" with sheet rock)
if we did buy this house, we'd make this basement a baby's play room or media room and wouldn't do a lot of standing anyway. i can walk down there fine, i'm 5'7". the laundry room is down there too.
just not sure if we'd get out of it what we expect. its really big, just really short too.

Re: Does anyone have a low ceiling finished basement?
my friend had purchased a home in merrick that had low ceiling too in the basement after they finished it , it was even lower. her DH is about 5 6-7 and it was close for him. I found myself walking funny, like ducking my head even though I would not touch it. eventually they sold.
I know my DH couldnt do it he is 6'2.

Re: Does anyone have a low ceiling finished basement?
My finished basement has a low ceiling. My DH is only 5'9" though, so he is completely fine down there. We have a few very tall friends who kind of have to duck when they go down. Right now, we have a TV down there and a table to play cards, so no one really stands up that much. We will probably make it in to a playroom one day. It's fine for us, but with your DH being taller than the ceiling would he be comfortable down there?

Re: Does anyone have a low ceiling finished basement?
you could probably dig it out, my cousin did that but his basement was more like a crawl space and he dug it all out and made it high enough (not sure of how high he made it)
but it could probably be costly.
our basement is over 7 feet. I personally wouldnt have bought a house with a low ceiling basement, it is an extra floor in yuor house, it should be used if you can!

Re: Does anyone have a low ceiling finished basement?
When we purchased our home the basement was a cellar with a low ceiling. At some points (under the main "I" beam) it was under 6 feet. We tossed around the idea of finishing as is or digging out. In the end we decided to dig out the basement, replace the main beam and do some other structural work. We gained about a foot of height all around, more in some areas (the flooring was uneven to start). The cost was not small, but since we decided to stay in the house we knew we needed more space. My husband and his father are in the process of finishing the basement now and I am very happy we did it.
However, if we move and purchase a new home, a standard height basement will be a must have.

the laundry room is down there too.
Right now we share laundry duty, so this would worry me as I could see getting stuck doing all of the laundry in the household for the rest of our lives there. If moving the laundry room upstairs isn't an option I'd probably keep looking at other houses rather than leave it as-is or take on the project of digging it out.

thanks for your input ladies. after looking at over a hundred houses, things like this only seem doable, but in the long run - its not a place we'd like to see our money go.
