does anyone have a working phone# for the nassau cty dept of assessment?
i've been calling 516-571-1500 but every time i ask for a rep, the phone automatically disconnects. i even tried the spanish speaking number 516-571-2020 a million times but no one picks up. do people work there?

it's in regards to the STAR application though... what is the town's number? i have a feeling that they will just direct me to the dept of assessment

A lot of people have been laid off from the assessment dept recently. You might be better off sending them a fax....571-1171

I was trying to reach them today, too and the exact same thing! I even called Nassau county's main number and no one picked up.
I assume it's due to the layoffs, but someone was working since I received an icorrect letter about my STAR.
I am going to call them again in the morning and stop by. Hopefully, someone will be there.

I received an incorrect letter from them yesterday about my STAR too. Said that a new deed was filed on my property and I needed to apply for STAR. That is not the case. I have been trying them all morning and only get a busy signal. I wonder if a lot of people got wrong letters and the lines are tied up?

Yes and I wonder the same thing.
I called Nassau County main # this morning and the operator said the Dept of Assessment "has been inundated by calls since the letters went out." I asked him if there was some issue since I received an incorrect letter and he said he had no idea (he was in Bethpage and they are in Mineola).

In a way I am glad to hear it's a bigger issue and not something that they messed up just with me!

I got this letter yesterday too, I was going to try to call but I guess now i will wait and see. I knew something was really up when I got a letter postmarked Jan 4 for something that was supposed to be due Jan 2

Oh good, I got this letter too and was freaking out! Like someone went and bought my home behind my back.  Can someone update if they get through? I think I can probably just throw the application away but I'd like to be sure before I ignore it.

WOW I rec'd this letter on Friday too and got alarmed as I KNOW I filled this out last year, we closed in 2010 so there is definitely not a new deed... been trying to get through all morning, been hit with busy signals.

Thanks for updating! I got through just now, gave my section and lot #s and she said it was a duplicate notice sent in error. She said I have STAR and I don't need to do anything.

I got this letter too.
I called the automated line and entered all of my information I am concerned though because it didnt say my Star was approved for 2012-2013.
We bought the house in April 2011 and I filed a new star application as soon as I got my deed. I am scared that it wasnt approved and that we are going to be charged higher taxes this year now! I cannot for the life of me get anyone on the phone.
Not sure what to do...anyone have any recommendations?

I don't think you'll see it until 2013... we applied for Star a few months after we closed (in June 2010) and I think it is JUST applying to our tax bill now for 2012

Okay so then since we have been paying with no exemptions since we closed on the house, we will continue to pay that way until 2013. Thats silly. Oh well.

I dialed the number you mentioned in your original post. I got tons of busy signals, then finally got an automated voice machine. I hit 0 to talk to a representative. Took me a few times to get through, but eventually did. good luck!
