Does anyone have carpet on their stairs but hardwood elsewhere?

We are putting Hardwood floors downstairs. I need to replace the carpet on the stairs and upstairs hallway as it is really nasty. We are debating hardwood in the upstiars hallway (since we would love to eventually hardwood the entire house).

Do you think it would look wierd to have hardwood downstaiirs to carpet on the stairs to hardwood upstairs? Will putting carpet only on the stairs make it look half done? Has anyone done this? Do you have pics? Thanks.

If your going to take the carpet off the stairs to replace it, I would just leave it off.....how bad are the stairs underneath the carpet? could they be refinished? I think it would look much better w/o the carpet.....GL

There is not wood under the carpet. I would have to put it down and it is a lot more money to do it (would cost $3,400 to hardwood stairs and hallway).

It is between:
1. hardwood upstairs hallway and carpet stairway ($1,700)

2. carpet upstairs hallway and stairway ($1,000)

I would put wood on the stairs and do a stair runner.
I really wanted to wood the stairs and the upstairs as well but that is going to have to wait but it is definitely in the back of my mind. When we do I'll do some kind of runner on the stairs.

This is what I would do - just to have the continuity... This would look best.

eta: When you are ready to do hardwood throughout - that's when I would change the upstairs hallway and stairs.

I had carpet and my stairs and hardwood all throughout my 1st floor. I had 1 step then a landing and the stairs turned 90 degrees, that 1 step and landing were wood too, I dont' think it looks bad at all. Do want you want to do!Chat Icon

Re: Does anyone have carpet on their stairs but hardwood elsewhere?

We put a patterned carpet on the stairs and upstairs hallway, with hardwood on the first floor and two out of three bedrooms upstairs. I had a hard time envisioning a solid carpet but I feel like the pattern makes it look more "runner"ish.

The wood on our stairs was pretty wrecked, so to redo it, and then get a runner (DH didn't want to leave the stairs as only wood because we have kids and they could slip) would've been very expensive.

I have hardwoods in most of the house and carpet on the stairs-my friend has this too after her daughter fell down the stairs. I can't take a pic right now cuz we just moved and I have np idea where my camer and cord is. But some nice neutral carpet would be fine i think..

We have hardwood and tile floors and our stairs are carpeted (two sets). The hallway upstairs is hardwood and the bedrooms are also carpeted. Looks fine to me.

My stairs have a runner but the upstairs and downstairs hallway are hardwood. Is this what you mean or do you mean fully carpeted? I can take pics if you'd like but I think you might mean the stairs being fully carpeted

I have ceramic tile throughout the downstairs leading to the stairs, carpet just on the stairs and Pergo on the upstairs landing, hallway and bedrooms.
We had hardwood on the stairs and we were going to have them finished but they were very noisy and with a newborn sleeping downstairs we decided to put carpet over them.
I think it looks fine.

our house had the second story added as an addition. The first floor was wood but they did not build stairs with finished wood so they carpeted them. We are about to put new carpet because we ripped the old up & we've been living with them painted white & looking crappy.
I don't have carpet upstairs either but our stairs turn twice & have unusual sized treads, it would be about 4k to redo them with wood. I'm not willing to spend that much.
I wanted to get it done before thanksgiving, I'll post pics when its done.

I have my stairs carpeted and there are hardwoods underneath. I prefer it because of safety and noise.

Re: Does anyone have carpet on their stairs but hardwood elsewhere?

Our first floor is all hard wood. When we moved in, the entire house was covered in wall to wall carpeting. We ripped out all the carpeting and the wood on the stairs and the 2nd floor was a mess. We elected to carpet the 2nd floor and the stairs - partly because it was easier and cheaper - but also because we have a young daughter and I wanted softer stairs.

I'll post a pic later - ideally I would like to finish the wood on the stairs and have a nice runner - but for now, the carpeting works great for us.
