Does anyone have the real answers re: back tattoos and epidurals?
I am thinking of getting a very large back piece this fall. It could possibly take up my entire back. The only thing that would stop me is if this rumor I heard about women with back tattoos not being able to get epidurals is true.
I called my Dr. to ask, but haven't received a call back. I did some research online and there seems to be a debate about it.
Does anyone have real life experience with a back tattoo (placed where the epi would go in) and childbirth meds?
Thanks!

I have a lower back tattoo and had an epi with no problems. They went right thru the tattoo. Same with my sister. I say go for it!

Never heard about this. The epi went right through my tattoo, and I had no problem.. to bad I was already fully dialated, and they had to turn it off so it was quite worthless, but if I wasn't ready to push, it would have been fine.

I have a fairly large on centered on my spine, mid back and one centered on my spine under that, it was not an issue at all.....the anesthesiologist was actually asking about them when he was inserting my epidural.

no offense, but that makes no sense. They'll go right through the tattoo.
For my 30th birthday I want a back piece done for my son so I hope that isn't true.

No offense taken...ithat is what I figured as well! But, have heard from a lot of people (mostly on the pregnancy boards here last year, but I didn't pay much attention b/c it didn't really effect me) that some anesthesiologists won't go through a tattoo. I just wanted real life answers!

I knew there was some kind of catch. My sister was researching for me and she said that there is a definite debate.

Yes it does make sense.
There is suspicion that the peice of skin with the ink from the tattoo would enter the spinal column/epidural space upon insertion of the needle. I would not want a peice of skin with ink floating around in there JMO.
What they believe it can do, I am not sure of but I know I did hear this and I would personally wait if I did not have one already.

I knew I remembered something! We were on the PG boards together and I clearly remember posts, I can't find them now.
I'm still waiting for my dr. to call back.

Re: Does anyone have the real answers re: back tattoos and epidurals?
Mine wouldn't go through mine and went above it. I thought he was joking at first because everyone told me it was no problem. So I had mine a little higher than normal. I am not sure if this is the reason the epidural gave me a spinal leak, did not work for me during labor at all and gave me a slew of side effects after. Not to scare you, but wanted to share my experience.

Re: Does anyone have the real answers re: back tattoos and epidurals?
I have the "tramp Stamp" and my dr made a point of telling me that the Tat would not be an issue. I always thought that was so strange, never heard of a debate. But no issues over here with it.

I have never heard this before. I have one and had a spinal. Not sure if it was in the area of the tattoo or not but no one said anything about it being a problem.
